From the staff of Early Intervention and V-Excel Remedial Centre
Greetings from Early Intervention and the Remedial Unit!
Visual perception: A training program was conducted on the 22nd of December 2023, by Ms. Saranya Murugan, Occupational Therapist, EI/VRC, on 'Visual Perception'.
The session started off with what perception meant, how we use our senses to understand the world around us, and delved further into the components of visual perception. The following components of visual perception were explained in detail:
1. Visual discrimination: This refers to the ability to find similarities among and/or differences between two or more objects. For example, differentiating between the letter's 'b' and 'd'.
2. Visual form constancy: This refers to being able to understand that regardless of the object's size, colour, texture, and so on, it is one and the same. For example, 'a' and 'A', although written in different cases, are the same. A dog, regardless of what it is doing (eating, playing, sleeping, etc.), is still a dog.
3. Visual memory is the ability to remember and recall what we see.
4. Visual closure: is the ability to grasp from surrounding cues what the object of interest is when it is incomplete. For example, being able to read words when part of the page is hidden.
5. Visual figure-ground perception: the ability to separate foreground from background. For example, on a page containing many pictures, being able to identify a picture in particular.
6. Visual sequential memory: the ability to remember and recall the object of interest in the same order that it appeared in. For example, being able to remember someone's phone number.
7. Spatial relationship: the ability to understand the directions and position of an object with regard to another. For example, being able to follow directions using arrow marks.
Ms. Saranya went on to say that visual perception is a part of visual-motor development and that it starts at around 4 months of age. Problems in visual perception may be explicitly visible when the child starts schooling, especially in areas of reading and writing.
Following the session, the participants were given a few activities on visual sequential memory, spatial relationships, visual discrimination, and visual form constancy to demonstrate how we use visual perception in our day-to-day lives. Ten participants took part in the session.
Christmas and New Year Celebrations: Noting Christmas on the 25th of December 2023, we at EI-VRC sang a few carol songs and a small prayer along with our children on the 23rd of December 2023. The children were given small presents commemorating the holiday season.

City News
December began with the rumblings of Cyclone Michaung. It created havoc in the city, bringing in heavy rainfall, flooding in many areas of Chennai, into the homes of people who were stranded or fled to safer places with their loved ones, complete power shut down for a few days, disruption of mobile network, making it difficult to reach out for help or to even confirm if people were safe. This brought life to a standstill. Many of our students' families were affected and a few of our staff too went through tough emotional experiences. School closed for an entire week while homes and roads struggled to get back to normal life.
Play collaboration:
It was against this backdrop that we tried in KLC to bring to the community a light of hope and we undertook a first time ever collaboration with a regular mainstream school who follow the Waldorf curriculum - TATVA. The two schools came together in a production entitled "Hope is born", a short play of 30 minutes bringing the story of Christ's birth. Students of class 11 and 12 of TATVA school, Polachery and a few students from senior school of KLC brought together a beautiful, deep and calm Christmas Story. For the first time inclusion, integration, acceptance, adjustment, caring happened so seamlessly that it made the term 'embrace differences' take on a whole new meaning. It took inclusion a nautch higher by making it an event of belonging where each person was whole and together, they performed. With just 3 days to practice, due to the cyclone, the students and teachers worked hard and presented the play at KLC, Mandaveli on 14th and at TATVA school on 15th for the parents and staff. It brought tears to many eyes and happiness in hearts to see this bond of friendship beginning between two sets of people from different ecosystems!
December Bazaar
Our Annual December Bazaar, which we usually bring as an offering to the community on World Disability Day 3 December, was postponed to December 16th. This day the whole building of Sharada, V-Excel, Mandaveli was utilised with the theme of Karthigai – birth of Lord Muruga and the mighty Lord Shiva on Thiruvannamalai, and a set up with the birth of Christ – a manger and Mother Mary waiting for the arrival of the Lord. All the 4 units of V-Excel – EI, KLC, YES and VTU in Chennai came together and held hands to make this experience a success. There was music, food, games, stalls of products made by the students, trainees and staff, and experiential learning of some of the vocational activities of V-Excel.
Christmas celebrations
Christmas was celebrated with Joy, peace, Love, forgiveness and deep calm in KLC this year, with Santa (Kailash, our regular Santa and a school Alumini) visiting school and meeting everyone patiently in the building, adults to the youngest child, hearing their wishes and posing for photos with all of them. The elves, Monesh and Karthick transported him from class to class, with Christmas Carols reverberating through the floor, rendered by Neha and in the classes by the teachers. Christmas presents were given to the children by the teachers. It was really a jolly merry Christmas and school closed on a festive note on 23 December for the end of the second term.
Tarang with a difference:
We had Harini and Bhavani from Portland, USA performing songs for our students on 21st December 2023 @ Sharada for December Festival. They expressed their desire to perform here at KLC and enjoyed the experience of being with our students.
School closed for the Christmas holidays on December 22nd.
We at KLC wish all our parents, donors, well-wishers, students and teachers of V Excel a wonderful happy new year -2024.

Vaikunda Ekadasi is a 21-day long festival celebrated at Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu. The festival began with Thirunedunthaandagam on December 3 and ended on January 2, 2024. The festival is divided into two parts: Pagalpatthu (morning part) and Irappatthu (night part). The opening of the Paramapathavasal gates, which is the most auspicious and central event of the annual festival, was scheduled for December 23. After that, trainees had lunch and started to get through the Paramapada Vaasal. One of our support staff had got permission and priority was given to our trainees in the queue, that helped us have the darshan in time.
We also got darshan of the two golden lizards on the ceiling of the Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam. They are believed to be sages who had turned into lizards because they had prepared the sacred prasadam carelessly and were redeemed through penance.
Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple is famous for its Sambara Dosa, which is also known as Srirangam Pizza. This dosa is distributed to devotees visiting the temple during Vaikunta Ekadasi. Volunteers from Take A Step, organised our Christmas celebrations at the centre. One of the volunteers came as Santa and gave sweets and gifts to all the trainees. They also sang a few carols.
New Year Day
On 29 December we had a daylong celebration to welcome the new year 2024. 'JUST A MINUTE' was played and trainees had to do a particular activity in one minute. It was real fun watching them rush in to finish first while all the others became cheerleaders. Later in the day we made healthy rice and jaggery puttu to begin the new year with a sweet note.
