Adulthood is a time of new possibilities. Through meaningful work, real-world experiences and strong community partnerships, Youth Empowerment Services (YES) supports young adults with disabilities as they build lives of purpose, grow in confidence and become active members of their communities.
The transition to adulthood
There comes a time in every family's life when childhood begins to give way to adulthood.
For families of young adults with disabilities, this transition brings with it a quiet but profound question:
Until now, school has provided a rhythm to everyday life. As that chapter draws to a close, families begin to look beyond timetables and classrooms towards something more enduring. They begin to imagine what adulthood might hold—meaningful work, lasting relationships, a place in the community, and a life lived with purpose and dignity.
These are not temporary milestones. They are the foundations of adult life.
At V-Excel, we believe every young adult deserves the opportunity to build those foundations. Youth Empowerment Services (YES) supports young adults as they discover their strengths, participate with confidence and build futures of purpose, confidence and community.
Our Approach
Every young adult's journey into adulthood is unique. Rather than following a predetermined path, we seek to understand each individual, create meaningful opportunities for growth and support a life that reflects their strengths, aspirations and potential. This philosophy shapes every experience at YES.
Every young adult brings unique strengths, interests, aspirations and ways of learning. We begin by understanding the individual—not simply the disability—and creating opportunities that build on existing abilities while encouraging new possibilities. This personalised approach ensures that every journey is meaningful, respectful and true to the individual.
We believe that adulthood is best learned by living it. Everyday experiences—working alongside peers, creating products, interacting with customers, participating in community events and taking on real responsibilities—become opportunities to develop confidence, practical skills and a growing sense of purpose.
Adulthood is about far more than acquiring skills. It is about building relationships, making choices, contributing to society and experiencing the confidence that comes from belonging. Our role is not to define what adulthood should look like, but to support every young adult in discovering what it can look like for them.
A day filled with purpose, belonging and possibility.
Walk through the doors of Youth Empowerment Services on any weekday morning and you will find a community already in motion. Conversations begin over a cup of tea, plans are made for the day ahead, and everyone has a role to play. Some young adults are preparing orders for dispatch, others are tending to the garden, welcoming visitors or settling into creative work. There is a quiet sense of purpose that runs through the centre—never hurried, yet always intentional.
As the day unfolds, work blends naturally with learning, creativity and opportunities to connect with others. These are not moments separate from learning; they are part of learning itself. Together, they create an environment where confidence grows, friendships flourish and every individual is encouraged to contribute in ways that are meaningful to them.
Every day begins with purpose.
At YES, work is more than a task to be completed. It is an opportunity to make something carefully, to take responsibility, to work alongside others and to see one’s effort become part of something larger.
Whether preparing products, organising materials, tending plants or fulfilling an order, each person contributes in a way that is visible and valued. The emphasis is not simply on productivity, but on craftsmanship, reliability and the pride that comes from doing something well.
Learning happens in the course of living.
Some lessons are learned while handling money, following a recipe, speaking with a customer, travelling through the neighbourhood or working through an unexpected change in plans.
These everyday experiences help young adults strengthen communication, decision-making, confidence and independence. Trainers and special educators remain close by, offering support when it is needed while allowing each person the space to try, reflect and discover what they can do for themselves.
A meaningful life needs room to breathe.
Music, movement, yoga, gardening and shared celebrations are not interruptions to the day. They are part of its natural rhythm. They create space for expression, calm, friendship and joy.
A song heard from another room, laughter over tea or the quiet satisfaction of watching something grow can be as important as any completed task. At YES, well-being is not scheduled around life. It is woven into life itself.
No one grows alone.
Life at YES is shaped by relationships—with peers, trainers, special educators, volunteers, families and visitors. People work alongside one another, share responsibility, notice when someone needs encouragement and celebrate progress without fanfare.
Over time, these ordinary moments create something enduring: a community in which every person is known, expected to contribute and supported to grow.
Every journey unfolds differently.
No two journeys at Youth Empowerment Services are ever quite the same. Every young adult arrives with their own experiences, strengths, interests and aspirations. Some quickly discover confidence in new environments, while others take time to find their rhythm. There is no prescribed path and no race to the finish. Instead, growth unfolds gradually—through everyday experiences, meaningful relationships and opportunities to contribute.
Over time, uncertainty gives way to confidence, curiosity becomes capability, and participation grows into purpose. While every journey is unique, many follow a similar rhythm—one measured not only by new skills, but by growing independence, stronger relationships and the confidence to shape one’s own future.
Every journey begins with a first step.
The first days are rarely about learning new skills. They are about finding comfort in an unfamiliar place—getting to know new faces, learning routines, sharing a conversation over tea, joining an activity and beginning to trust.
For many young adults and their families, this is the moment they realise they are entering a community where each person will be known as an individual, respected for who they are, and encouraged to grow at their own pace.
A place begins to feel possible when it first feels safe.
Everyone has strengths waiting to be uncovered.
As confidence grows, so does curiosity. Young adults begin exploring different forms of work, creative activities, community experiences and everyday responsibilities.
Sometimes they discover abilities they never knew they possessed. Sometimes they simply discover what brings them joy. This stage is less about choosing a destination than about opening the door to possibility.
Discovery begins when there is room to try without fear.
Confidence is built one experience at a time.
Growth rarely happens all at once. It is found in the quiet accumulation of everyday moments—taking initiative, communicating more confidently, solving a problem independently, completing a task with care or encouraging a friend.
These experiences gradually become habits. Those habits become confidence. And confidence opens the door to greater independence.
Small achievements gather until they begin to change how a person sees themselves.
Purpose grows when our work matters to someone else.
Perhaps the most important transformation happens when young adults begin contributing in meaningful ways. Their work supports a customer. Their ideas improve a process. Their care helps maintain a shared space. Their encouragement lifts a friend.
Contribution changes how others see them. More importantly, it changes how they see themselves.
The moment someone realises they are needed is often the moment possibility becomes purpose.
Belonging is built through shared purpose.
Somewhere along the way, YES quietly becomes more than a programme. It becomes familiar. Friendships deepen. Responsibilities become opportunities. Achievements are celebrated together. People look out for one another.
Belonging is not something given on the first day. It grows through shared experiences, mutual respect and the knowledge that each person has something valuable to contribute.

At Youth Empowerment Services, success is never defined by a single destination. Every individual grows in their own way, at their own pace, and with their own aspirations. For some, it may mean securing meaningful employment. For others, it may be building confidence, discovering new talents, developing greater independence or forming lasting friendships.
Rather than measuring lives against a fixed standard, we celebrate the many ways in which individuals continue to grow, contribute and find their place within their families, workplaces and communities.
Everyday routines gradually become opportunities to make decisions, solve problems and take greater ownership of daily life. With growing confidence comes the freedom to navigate the world with increasing independence.
Whether creating handcrafted products, contributing in the workplace or supporting community initiatives, meaningful work brings more than skills. It nurtures pride, responsibility and the quiet satisfaction of knowing that one's efforts matter.
Friendships formed through shared experiences often become an important source of encouragement, belonging and mutual support. Families, peers and colleagues all become part of a wider community where individuals continue to grow together.

At Youth Empowerment Services, our role is not to define what success should look like, but to walk alongside individuals and their families as they discover what it can become. Stories of Possibility
Every journey is unique. These are three of the many stories that continue to unfold at Youth Empowerment Services—stories of dreams taking shape, setbacks met with courage, and opportunities shared with others.
Dream
“I want to learn as much as possible and I will. So one day I will be able to open my own bakery. I will also support my friends who are working with me.”
Dhennussa
Dhennussa dreams of opening a bakery of her own. When she joined Youth Empowerment Services, health concerns, limited exposure to the outside world and low self-confidence had made everyday life feel uncertain. Yet beneath that uncertainty was a warm personality, a love of baking and arts and crafts, and a quiet determination to build a meaningful future.
At YES, her journey unfolded one step at a time. She developed practical skills, learned to travel independently, became more confident in making decisions and discovered strengths she had not recognised before. Along the way, she found encouragement from her peers and trainers and gradually grew into a mentor for other trainees.
Today, Dhennussa is a paid baking intern at Writer’s Café—a role that reflects both her passion and her perseverance. More importantly, she is building a future on her own terms. Her dream is not simply to work in a bakery, but one day to open one of her own—and to create opportunities for her friends as well.
Possibility often begins with something beautifully ordinary: believing that tomorrow can be different from today.
Perseverance
When Gokulakrishna—affectionately known as Gokula—joined V-Excel’s vocational training programme at eighteen, he was quiet, reserved and unsure of himself. Through patient guidance, counselling, workplace preparation and vocational training, he gradually developed new skills and a more assured way of carrying himself.
His first placement with a reputed hotel chain was a proud milestone. Within days, however, the pandemic brought that opportunity to an abrupt end. YES remained in touch with Gokula and his family, helping him stay focused and ready for the next step.
Post-COVID, he joined another hotel as a trainee, earned a place on its payroll and became part of the Front Office team. Then the hotel was acquired and closed, and Gokula lost his job for a second time. His parents were understandably anxious, but the search for a suitable opportunity continued.
Today, Gokula works at the corporate office of the Rane Group in Guindy, contributing to back-office operations. A colleague mentors him, and the wider team has helped him settle into the workplace with confidence. His journey reminds us that progress is rarely a straight line. Sometimes it is the courage to begin again that carries a person forward.
Gokula continues to grow in a workplace where he is respected, supported and valued.
Belonging
“My mother taught me to be kind, caring and polite, and to be respectful towards the elderly.”
Venkatesh
Venkatesan Sampathkumar—known affectionately as Venkatesh—grew up in Nemmeli, around thirty kilometres from Chennai, in a close and supportive family. His parents and older siblings stood beside him through medical, developmental, speech and visual challenges. When he speaks about his childhood, what comes through most clearly is not hardship, but gratitude.
In 2017, Venkatesh enrolled at V-Excel. His interest and aptitude for industrial laundry work soon became evident, and he moved to Youth Empowerment Services for job-oriented training. The long daily commute did not deter him. He arrived on time, regained confidence and eventually began mentoring other trainees—taking pride in responsibilities that once might have felt beyond his reach.
In 2018, he was selected for a role with the Buhari Group and became an earning member of his family at eighteen. He later moved into front-end operations, received an Employer of the Month recognition and continued to grow into the sociable, curious young man he had always had the potential to become.
When Venkatesh received his first salary, he returned to V-Excel and chose to donate the entire amount. No one had asked him to do so. It was his way of expressing gratitude—and of helping another young person begin a journey of their own.
Someone who once came seeking opportunity had returned as a contributor. The circle was complete—and another could begin.
