Transactional Analysis
Strokes
According to Eric Berne (1971), the founder of T.A., "a stroke is a unit of recognition". To clarify things even more- A stroke is a unit of attention which provides stimulation to an individual of social action. A stroke is a unit of recognition, when one person recognises another person. A stroke can be physical, verbal or non-verbal and so could be a hand shake, a compliment or a nod of the head. It could also be a "Hello", "Go away!" or a dismissive wave of the hand. All of these acknowledge that the other person exists.
Berne introduced the idea of strokes into Transactional Analysis based upon the work of Rene Spitz, a researcher who did pioneering work in the area of child development. Spitz observed that infants deprived of cuddling, touching and handling (in other words, not receiving any physical strokes) were more likely to experience emotional and physical difficulties.
Berne took Spitz's observations of these infants and developed theories about the needs of adults for strokes. Berne postulated that adults do need physical contact just like infants, but have learned to substitute other types of recognition for physical stimulation. So while an infant needs cuddling, an adult craves a smile, a wink, a hand gesture, or some other form of recognition. Berne defined this requirement of adults to receive strokes by the term "recognition-hunger" or "stroke-hunger". He said that we are all desperately seeking strokes from others and that a lot of what we do is in order to be stroked.
Understanding how people give and receive both positive and negative strokes, and changing the unhealthy patterns of stroking are important aspects of TA.
So, the topic for this month was Strokes and was beautifully explained by our unit head Lekshmi Ramesh with real life examples . We really felt that these sessions helped us to understand ourselves and ways to improve our relationship with others.
Another memorable event this month was the Town Hall Meeting on 25 th April where all the members of V-Excel assembled and exchanged information about their work. Our team also presented a video incorporating the activities. It was well recieved and was really a proud moment.
As we move on to another Academic Year, we take this time to introspect what all went well, could have been better and things that could be dropped.
With a new resolve we need to tread forward and remember that only the calendar is changing and we are the same. Our determination and faith to make a difference in every child's life will definitely give positive results.
Wishes to all from EI/VRC family.

Autism Awareness Day
"Autism is a serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact".
2nd April was Autism Awareness Day and we at V-Excel Educational Trust had the same planned at our Sharada center. Blue was the color of the day and the event that was organised made us wonder if our children were truly on the spectrum. Our very own Blue - Blue Choir, comprising of special children, performed many songs; we had an art display; and many parents and siblings shared personal stories. In all their stories there was a single message for all - to be proud of and be happy with these special children. Let them grow at their own pace. Let us empower, include and embrace differences. The event ended with much appreciation of the art display and the sale of two works of art. Many tears of joy were shed.

World Autism Awareness Day
To commemorate World Autism Awareness Day, we conducted a campaign at Express Avenue Mall, Chennai on Sunday 03 April 2022. This was part our 2-day Autism Awareness initiative involving all our Chennai centres. Products made by our trainees were showcased and the process involved in making each product was explained by our trainees themselves. Staff members and parents were present to guide the trainees. A special badge was designed and printed inhouse and the same was distributed to the general public at the mall.
We were at the mall for the entire day and had the opportunity to meet many people and talk about our work. People were very receptive of the campaign. The message was well received, and in fact, people from different walks of life and age groups showed a great interest in knowing more about autism and our services. The feedback received was positive and heart-warming.
Over all it was a wonderful experience in terms of getting our message across and receiving heartfelt appreciations from visitors. Our trainees benefited greatly from the exposure.
We are grateful to Ms. Lakshmi, Mr. Gabriel and the entire admin team of the EA Mall for having provided us the space and for being so encouraging at all times.

Training Session for Staff
We have conducted a Training Session for Staff on Transaction Analysis- Part II.
As a part of Transactional Analysis, the EI staff have introduced the topic "Johari Window". It was an interesting session where the members tried to place themselves and also their colleagues in the quadrant.
The Johari Window
It is necessary to improve self-awareness and personal development among individuals when they are in a group. The "Johari" window model is a convenient method used to achieve this task of understanding and enhancing communication between the members in a group. American psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham developed this model in 1955. The idea was derived as the upshot of the group dynamics at the University of California and was later improved by Joseph Luft. The name "Johari" came from joining their first two names. This model is also denoted as the feedback/disclosure model of self-awareness. The Johari window model is used to enhance the individual's perception of others. This model is based on two ideas- trust can be acquired by revealing information about yourself to others and learning from their feedback. Each person is represented by the Johari model through four quadrants or window panes. Each four window panes signifies personal information, feelings, motivation, and whether that information is known or unknown to oneself or others in four viewpoints.

Town Hall meeting
At V-Excel, the year 2021-2022 culminated with a very successful and well-attended Town Hall meeting on 25th April. Two years of quiet and not meeting people were very disheartening and the in-person meeting was a big relief. Coordinators from our other satellite centers in Nashik, Solapur and Anandam attended too. Many stories were exchanged and all got to see videos of the variety of activities each center had to share. A lot of learning happened and there was a lot of appreciation by every member present. It was a good platform to meet the old and introduce the new to other V-Excel members.
The movie Ahaan was shown followed by a spirited discussion about disabilities. The art activity got everyone in high spirits and and immense enthusiasm. There was never a dull moment throughout the day. The day ended with happy faces and plans and promises to meet again soon.
The town hall meeting was followed by a day-and-a-half of Unit Heads meeting. We owe a big gratitude to Dr. Lakshmi Prasanna who guided the team through activities and conversations to see how best we could use our resources for the betterment of special children and the growth of V-Excel.
These magical three days left us with a lot of food for thought - all keeping in mind how to do better and take the good work forward.

Movie day at YES
Chennai's weather forced us to think beyond our usual field trips. Thus came this Movie day held at our Mylapore center.
The day comprised of a communal lunch, followed by movie watching (popcorn included) and ended with the trainees returning home with a smiley badge and a therapy ball.
Our trainees were grouped into different teams under the guidance of 2 trainers. Each team took care of different activities like arranging for lunch, serving, cleaning, movie screening arrangements, popcorn making and packing. To make it more interesting, we had designed tickets for this movie and had a ticket counter as well.
We watched the movie Oh my Dog, which is about the bonding between a blind puppy and a small boy. We thoroughly enjoyed the day watching this together in a simulated ambience resembling that of a movie theatre.

Parents should treat child according to their developmental age not their chronogical age.

Child's understanding should be enhanced by involving him in day to day functions thus giving him functional therapy.
Vacations are the best time for parent child bonding where child can be more aware of his house and explore it. Child can learn by imitating other family members.
As a parent we should identify the likes and hobbies of child and let them do what they like to do and get involve with them.

Story of Arpith Ashok
Art can be therapeutic; it is a stress buster, it is inspirational and improves one's focus and concentration.
This is a sweet story of Arpith Ashok, a trainee from YES Mylapore. Arpith has a natural inclination for the arts and is talented in drawing and painting. Recently, with help and guidance from his parents, Arpith exhibited his artwork at his grandfather's 80th birthday. He overcame his inhibitions and went on stage to speak about his art, his institute, his inspirations and intentions. Along with a lot of appreciation and recognition, Arpith was able to sell his artwork, duly framed, and what he earned from this, he magnanimously shared with his centre as a token of love and gratitude.
From all of us at YES, and from V-Excel, we salute Arpith for his work and generosity of spirit.

Solapur
2nd April is celebrated as the World Autism Awareness Day and we at V-Excel Learning Center Solapur arranged an awareness program "SAVANGADI" for grandparents. There is always a special bond between children and their grandparents. They always want to help the child. While providing services at the center we found that due to extra care and love or extreme negligence towards a special child, negative behaviour of children was increased hence it was necessary to educate grandparents about the condition and the problems of their child.. Dr. Radhika Honap guided grandparents through her presentation. During the program we realised that 90% of the grandparents were unaware of what problems their child had. Our program was helpful in understanding Autism and how to deal with children at home. Better understanding about our child will help parents for support from elders at home.
Chief guest for the program was Mrs.Chanda Patil Ma'am -Founder director of Tiny Thoughts Nursery School, Solapur running from past 30 years. Grandparents also shared feedback about how the therapies at the center were helpful.
On 5 th April as Autism awareness we printed posters showing symptoms of autism and other disabilities and our services, so that common people could understand and screen the child around them. We displayed them in doctors' clinics which many parents of special children visited. Dr. Manisha Chavan, senior pediatrician and president of Academy Of Pediatrics helped us in displaying the posters.
One of our honourable donors Mr.Baladava and his family invited us to their family function. They wanted to spread awareness among their friends and community about our good work and services. Interestingly, they did not accept gifts from guests instead they collected donations from them in a mud pot and sent their collected amount to V-Excel.
From 18th April to 28th April we have organised a summer camp for our children. Many purposeful activities like Yoga and meditation, Story telling, Pretend play, Kitchen activity, Art, Craft, music and dance, fun games and many other activities are included in this program. Children enjoyed the activities thoroughly.
'Stress Management' Workshop and parents meeting was conducted on 30th April 22. Meeting started with stress management workshop by Dr. Manisha Chavan, senior pediatrician and follower of Rajyog Meditation. Teachers distributed report cards to parents, met them individually, discussed about child's progress ,gave and explained the homework for summer vacation.

YES team participated in the V-Excel townhall meeting which was on 25 April 2022 in full strength. From YES, a video was shared with the audience which showcased all the activities of YES. All the staff members participated in all the fun activities that were organised for the day and it paved way to know each other from other units of V-Excel.
Art by Arpith
This is a sweet story of Arpith Ashok, a trainee from YES Mylapore. Arpith has a natural inclination for the arts and is talented in drawing and painting. Recently, with help and guidance from his parents, Arpith exhibited his artwork at his grandfather's 80th birthday. He overcame his inhibitions and went on stage to speak about his art, his institute, his inspirations and intentions. Along with a lot of appreciation and recognition, Arpith was able to sell his artwork, duly framed, and what he earned from this, he magnanimously shared with his center as a token of love and gratitude.
Movie day at YES
29 April 2022, movie day at YES comprised of a communal lunch, followed by movie watching (popcorn included) and ended with the trainees returning home with a smiley badge and a therapy ball. Our trainees were grouped into different teams under the guidance of 2 trainers. Each team took care of different activities like arranging lunch, serving, cleaning, movie screening arrangements, popcorn making and packing.
