Greetings from Early Intervention and the Remedial Unit!
Emotional Literacy: A Lifelong Skill for Every Child
By Adithi Jagannath,Special Educator, V-Excel Remedial Center
Building Emotional Awareness
In February, children in the remedial centre have been learning to name emotions and explore ways to regulate them. At the start of each remedial class, they pause to check in with themselves, reflecting on how they feel in the present moment. This mindful pause helps children recognize that emotions are natural and valid.
Validation and Acceptance
Teachers play a crucial role by validating emotions non-judgmentally. This process reassures children that all feelings—whether joy, sadness, frustration, or excitement—are acceptable. By normalizing emotions, children learn that feelings are not problems to be hidden but experiences to be understood.
Coping Strategies
After naming and validating emotions, teachers and students collaboratively explore coping strategies. This empowers children to actively manage their emotional states, fostering independence and resilience. Emotional literacy becomes a mindful life skill that supports them in any situation.
There are multiple approaches to teach emotional regulation skills that we have been using:
• Feelings Thermometer: Helps children visualize the intensity of their emotions.
• Emotion Cards: Provides visual cues to identify and express feelings.
• Emotional Questionnaires: Encourages reflection and self-awareness.
• Play Therapy: Uses imaginative play to process emotions safely.
• Art Therapy: Offers creative outlets for expression and regulation.
How it affects :
• Academic Growth: Emotional regulation enhances focus and learning.
• Social Skills: Children develop empathy and stronger peer relationships.
• Resilience: Coping strategies prepare them for challenges beyond the classroom.
• Lifelong Impact: Emotional literacy is a transferable skill that supports well-being across all stages of life.
A brief note on Adithi Jagannath
Adithi Jagannath completed her four-year undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education at James Cook University, Australia. After graduation, she taught children aged 3 to 8 at an early intervention and remedial centre in Singapore for two years, focusing on pre-reading, reading, and communication skills.
She later moved to Chennai and undertook a six-month intensive teacher training program at the Madras Dyslexia Association, where she specialized in remedial education for children with specific learning difficulties. Following this, Adithi joined V-Excel Educational Trust as a remedial educator and completed a certificate course in art and play therapy.
Adithi is passionate about teaching children with diverse needs and nurturing their strengths to help them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Kaleidoscope Learning Centre
From Shashikala Subramaniam's Desk
Colours are the smiles of nature.
February at Kaleidoscope Learning Centre was a month marked by love and purposeful hard work. With calm focus and thoughtful intention, the entire school community dedicated this period to deep engagement with the structured curriculum. The days flowed with reassuring rhythm and continuity, allowing the children to settle into meaningful learning without breaks or disruptions to their carefully planned schedules.
This consistency created a nurturing space where small but significant strides could unfold. Through patient guidance, steady routines, and the quiet commitment of the team, the children were able to build skills, confidence, and independence in ways that truly honour their individual journeys.
Art and Cultural Participation:
JAVATE 2026 – Special Cultural Event
The much-awaited tenth edition of JAVATE, a special cultural event, was scheduled to be held on Saturday, 7th February 2026 at Sir Mutha School, No. 7, Shenstone Park, Harrington Road, Chetpet, Chennai – 600 031.
In the weeks leading up to the event, the students of KLC worked with great enthusiasm and dedication, practicing diligently for the various competitions. Across categories such as art, dance, music, singing, fancy dress and the talent show, the school spaces were filled with purposeful activity and quiet determination.
These preparations were made possible by a deeply committed group of teachers who patiently trained and guided the students through each step. With sensitivity, encouragement, and clear structure, they supported the children in refining their skills, building stage confidence, and expressing themselves with joy.
JAVATE continues to be a vibrant and inclusive platform that celebrates the talents and expressive abilities of children and young adults with diverse developmental profiles. KLC students won 3rd prize in the Art Competition and group singing competition.
Following their participation in JAVATE, the students were felicitated in school in front of their peers. It was a heart-warming moment as teachers spoke about each child — highlighting their efforts, the discipline shown during practice sessions, and their performances at the event. The atmosphere was filled with encouragement and cheerful applause, reinforcing a culture where effort is valued and every achievement, big or small, is celebrated. The recognition not only honoured their participation but strengthened their confidence and sense of belonging within the school community.
Tarang for the Month:
The musical event Tarang – Theme: My Choice, held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore, was an engaging and uplifting experience for our students and trainees.
Neha Girish, just 19 years old and a child prodigy in singing, kept the audience mesmerised with her melodious voice and confident stage presence. Her rendition of songs reflected both maturity and effortless control, drawing warm appreciation from everyone present.
Kaushik Sridharan, a long-standing friend of V-Excel, graciously supported her performance. He further enlivened the programme by presenting songs in multiple languages, creating a vibrant and inclusive musical atmosphere that resonated with the diverse audience.
The accompanying artists — on keyboard and percussion — complemented the singers beautifully, lending enthusiastic and skilled support throughout the performance. Their seamless coordination added depth and energy to the concert.
Tumbak-a-Tumba – Singing with Joy:
As part of the celebrations marking the 25th year of V-Excel Educational Trust, the musical evening Tumbak-a-Tumba – Singing with Joy brought together an engaging blend of voices and musical styles. The programme featured performances by the Blue Blue Sky Choir, The Chennai Children’s Choir, and The Voice Circle, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with rhythm, harmony and enthusiasm.
The evening was further enriched by beautiful individual and joint renditions by Vedanth Bharadwaj, Vasudha, and Praveena, whose performances added depth and variety to the musical experience and kept the audience engaged throughout. Puja has always been a part of Blue Blue Sky choir and the addition of Elvis on the percussion added to the musical experience.
Students and trainees of KLC participated with great enthusiasm. All of them waited patiently and calmly for over three hours, along with their teachers, demonstrating remarkable discipline and excitement as they awaited their turn to perform.
The audience was wonderfully diverse — parents, family members, friends, well-wishers, and students from other special schools — all of whom came together to celebrate music and inclusion. For many of the KLC students, this was their first experience performing on stage, making the evening especially meaningful and memorable.
The programme was not only a celebration of music, but also a moment of pride and joy for the students as they stepped onto the stage with confidence and shared their voices with the community.
As we step into March, the coming weeks will be filled with focused curriculum work, parent group and individual meetings, and the many tasks that accompany the closing of an academic year. With the school scheduled to break for the summer vacation in mid-April, the team will be engaged in thoughtfully winding up activities and reviewing the progress of each student. It has been a fulfilling year — one that brought with it many changes, improvements, successes and also a few challenges. Each of these experiences has contributed to learning and growth for both our students and the team, strengthening our commitment to continue striving towards meaningful education.

Lunch was enjoyed at Sivagangai Park, a peaceful spot that gave everyone a chance to relax and spend time together.
The students then visited the Thanjavur Maratha Palace Complex. Here they explored the Rajaraja Chola Art Gallery, the Royal Palace Museum, Durbar Hall, and the tall Bell Tower (Gooda Gopuram). They also saw the sculpture of Sarabhoji Raja and visited the Nataraja Arangam, which reflects the deep connection between temple culture and the classical arts of Tamil Nadu.
One attraction that particularly fascinated the students was the preserved Whale Skeleton displayed inside the museum. Its size and structure sparked their curiosity about marine life and biodiversity.
The group returned to the centre , carrying with them a day full of learning, culture, and memorable experiences.
