Greetings from Early Intervention and the Remedial Unit!
Observation at Olcott Memorial School:
On the 9th of November, 2023, representatives from Chola MS General Insurance visited the Olcott Memorial School to understand the working of the resource room setup by our therapist there and how the service is offered. Mr. Mujibur Rahman, Senior Therapist, Ms. Sumathi, Counselor, and Ms. Shobana, Administrator, represented EI-VRC during the visit.
Diwali celebrations: A small celebratory event was conducted on November 10, 2023, by the staff and children of EI-VRC. Diyas were lit, and a small prayer was sung to grace the occasion.
Play therapy: A training program was conducted on the 17th of November 2023, by Ms. Nasrath Banu, Special Educator, EI/VRC, on ‘Play therapy'.
The session covered what play therapy is, its types, the benefits of it, and skill-developing strategies through play.
Play therapy is a psychological tool used by mental health practitioners and therapists (physical therapists, behavioral therapists, and occupational therapists) to observe and gain insight into a child's problems. It is primarily used for children because they may not be able to understand, express, process, and/or articulate their emotions to their caregivers. It can be used with any individual who has difficulty putting into words their thoughts or emotions, regardless of their age. The therapist gains an understanding of the individual through their play (behavior).
Types of play: Directive play is where the child (client) is guided by the therapist as to how to engage in play, be it with toys, role-play, or playing games with rules. Non-directive play is where the therapist does not provide any direction as to how to engage in play, and the child (client) is free to play in any manner they wish to. Another kind of play therapy is Child-centred Play Therapy (CCPT), which involves being congruent and empathetic with the child and, creating a safe space that allows the child to express themselves and grow.
Benefits of play: The following areas are impacted when children/adults engage in play: improving physical and cognitive capabilities, autonomy, language, creativity, self-esteem, socialization, teamwork and coordination, understanding leadership, taking turns, sharing, and regulation of emotions and stress.
Skill-developing strategies through play: The following areas can be improved when play is used as a tool with children: response to name calls, making and maintaining eye contact, focus and attention, taking turns, motor skills, body language, interactive communication, expressive and receptive language, functional skills, and academic skills.
Ms. Nasrath also touched upon how play therapy is used as a supportive tool with regard to early intervention in children, especially with children who have conditions such as Autism, Attention deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and/or a Learning Disability (LD). She also went on to say how play is a crucial marker in identifying if a child has achieved a developmental milestone or if it has any difficulty in achieving it.
As part of the session, the participants engaged in a few games to gain a better understanding of how play could be helpful in fostering learning and development. Ten participants took part in the session.
Screening at Korattur Government School: As part of our outreach program supported by Chola MS General Insurance, a screening camp was conducted at Korattur Governmet School on the 12th and 19th of October 2023, and 2nd of November 2023. Students from grades I, II, III, and IV were screened during the camp. It was a three-day screening camp. The number of beneficiaries of the screening camp is 55.
Screening at Cathedral Free Primary School: As part of our outreach program supported by Chola MS General Insurance, a screening camp was conducted at Cathedral Free Primary School on the 21st and 23rd of November 2023. Students from grades II, III, IV, and V were screened during the camp. Ten children were identified as having substantial difficulties in regard to their psychomotor development and/or learning.
As part of the outreach, a sensitization session was conducted for the school teachers by Ms. Lekshmi Ramesh, Unit Head, Early Intervention and Remedial Unit, V-Excel Educational Trust. She spoke on the importance of early intervention, how it helps children with special needs, and how it is a collective effort by parents, the school, and the early intervention team to help address the needs of the child.

Aravind Karthik
Karthick (one of our teachers) and Jolly celebrated their wedding reception on November 1st at Hotel Sangeetha. Many of our staff, students and parents attended the reception and wished the couple the very best in their life.
The Festival of Anthroposophy 2023 was held between 2nd and 5th November at Erode at The Vels Academy. KLC was invited to demonstrate and to give practical experience of Curative Education and Social Therapy, that KLC works with the students. 6 of KLC staff attended this Festival, bringing in bit of awareness to many of the participants on 2 days in workshops that involved movement, handwork, music therapy, form drawing, a short main lesson, foot massage and putting together the efforts of stitching of the participants into a combined piece of a center mat. The participants had many questions regarding our work, about how to work with children in mainstream schools and wanted to visit the school. The most touching experience that we had was the unplanned participation of a child in our workshop and how his mother and his teacher who were also there saw a different, calm, occupied, changed boy during the session and afterwards, that day.
HPCL Ltd., had invited V-Excel to set up a stall at their premises on November 6th. A few products of KLC were also set up and sold in the stall along with the products of the other units. The VTU and YES teams manned the stall. There was a good response and appreciation from the employees.
Diwali the festival of lights, is also a time to celebrate relationships both old and new, with diyas, music, dance and food, in KLC the last few years. It has also been celebrated as a noiseless and smokeless day without any crackers, bringing about awareness to a better environment. We had over 120 people on November 10th evening at Sharada, celebrating this occasion with us. The foyer space was beautifully decorated by the teachers with paper lanterns, electric tealights, flowers, and beautiful rangolis both near the gate and near the butterfly tree. Parents, students, staff and friends joined in lighting oil diyas and wax tea lights bringing in more light to the space. Dinner was sponsored by well-wishers of KLC.
Tarang for November was by Shantala on Flute, Abhnaya on Vocals, Bharath on Keyboard and Hariharan on Mridangam and Kunnakol. The introduction of different musical instruments continued with Flute, during the performance. Flute by itself is such a melodious musical instrument and combined with the performances of all the artists, kept the audience enthralled.
Our Vocational activity of stitching by the students, this month also catered to a customized order from Poornima. We made 1 runner, 6 table mats and 6 cushions for her. The work was well appreciated by her. She sent us a photo of the completed look of the dining area.
Rekha, one of our senior students, has been with us for nearly 12 years. These years have been enriching for her to be a Jill of all Trades whether it be cooking, stitching, candle making, vocations she has been working on apart from getting her ready to become independent. Now at the age of 21, she has taken a small step outside into the wide-open world, to work as a trainee at Writer’s Café, Egmore for a period of 6 months. She started her training accompanied by one of the teachers, Mahalakshmi, who has been helping her to slowly settle down into the new environment and routine. Slowly she is learning to be alone and independent at the Café and learn her job. We are looking forward to her completing the training and being employed since 22-Nov-2023.
Kaarthigai deepam, the festival of lamps to celebrate both Lord Murugan and Lord Shiva, on the full moon day of the month of Karthigai had the candle making vocation students and teachers working overtime in painting the mud diyas, decorating it, filling it with wax and packing it attractively. There were many takers to these beautiful diyas from the parent's groups of the school. The feedback for these diyas / agals were positive as they burned steadily and slowly for a long time. Some teachers too bought them for their homes.
Every year to bring about an awareness to the public – our parents, friends, well-wishers and public, of what our students and trainees are capable of, a December Bazaar has been organised around December 3rd which is “The International Day for Persons with Disability”. All the Units of V-Excel come together to present this Bazaar. This year too we are planning for the Bazaar on December 2nd and the students and teachers of KLC are busy with their hands in completing the products which will be on sale to the public. There will be music, food, games and counters and counters of products made by all the Units. We give you a look into what will be happening: 😊
PS The Bazaar has been postponed to the 16th of December in wake of the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung.

Progress Report Day
What's more difficult than creating the report cards of once own students? Writing a unique and meaningful report card and making remarks can be a daunting and tedious task for teachers. Every teacher will agree that writing unique report card comments is important as it helps the parents to understand their child's progress. It can help parents to take necessary action by understanding the report card comments.
On 4th November, our V-Excel Centre conducted the result day. Teachers discussed their students' progress with their parents, development in academic or social behaviour. Parents were given information regarding their kid's progress and the home program
Providing specific information about how a child is doing in core subjects helps parents know exactly what to expect on the grades portion of the report card and what the child needs to work on.
