Navrathri is a festival that is celebrated over nine days. We in EI planned in such a way that our children were engaged in activities related to these nine days. Unlike the decorations that we usually make for the festivals,we decided to make a golu- an arrangement of dolls that the children would bring from their homes.
Every child was asked to bring a doll and also the parents were asked to write why these dolls were special for their children. These slips were then displayed alongwith the dolls.
Another important item of Navrathri is the Dandiya. Though it is practiced in North India, the staff decided to learn it and perform it alongwith the students on the final day. The practice sessions were enjoyable and relaxing for all.
The nine colours of Navarathri were introduced. Every day, the child would come and do finger printing on the chart with the colours assigned for the day and also identify similar colours in the environment. The story on Navarthri was narrated and colouring pages were given. On Vijayadasami day a small pooja was done and the dance performed by the staff and the students.
We are happy and proud to say that we have been able to integrate festivals into our therapy and acitivities to bring in learning in all our children. We have already started planning for Diwali and Christmas and shall be back with more exciting news.

Crawling back to normalcy, after the pandemic was seeming longer, more difficult and extremely slow. In this period, the advent of October came as a breath of fresh air. It was the festive season beckoning us back to life. So, Navratri saw the dolls being laid out in the traditional Golu. The children in the school visited the Golu and sat around while traditional songs were sung.
School was closed from 7th to the 14th of October and on 15th October a small puja was done on the occasion of Vijayadashami.
School reopened with longer hours and a full day for the Junior school as well as for Senior School, on the 18th of October and there was a thrust in the vocations as everyone was preparing for the upcoming participation in “The Marketplace”, a live event of selling indigenous products, in a common place. So, from KLC we began to prepare adult and baby dohars with quilting work, applique and machine stitching and making diyas with wax for the coming Diwali season. Our dohars have been giving a lot of joy to some of our friends. One mother who received our baby dohar had this to say: (Praveena - a friend of V -Excel had bought this baby dohar from our centre...)
Hey Praveena and team V Excel!
The handmade dohar that you all made for Rishi's birthday is beautiful, special, and comfortable. Rishi is a second born and as all second borns do, he only had a lot of things that were purchased for his brother. This blanket is Rishi's own (though Dev may not agree). There is something special about any gift that is handmade, like the gifts Netra and Rudra gave Dev for his birthday. But they are his friends. You all, doing this, giving your time, hard work, love, and blessings for a child born in the middle of a pandemic, a child you have never seen is truly touching. Words cannot adequately express the gratitude I feel in my heart, perhaps if this message was written on a physical paper, you'll see the tear stains.
Once it is safe for all of us to meet, please let us do!
I can't wait to take the kids for the V Excel production of Lion King, again soon.
Thank you, guys!
Diwali was the block in many classes and stories of why Diwali is celebrated in various parts of India was discussed and brought to the students.
The parent group Disha, was re-energised and the first live meeting in two years happened under the leadership of Priya Dandapani our very involved parent volunteer and it was an exciting beginning and encouraging too where parents assembled , were addressed by Dr. Vasudha Prakash and Lakshmi Sudhakaran. Many of our parents participated in this meeting. We hope to revive Disha and see it flourishing once again.
While classes started in right earnest during school hours many students came for individual therapy with Puja at school or at her house. Art therapy for Prasad, Akshay Sundar, Akshay Nathan, continuing of projects on their writing and joy therapy was a big part of October work.
Similarly, a few of the children got external therapy regularly from Neha during the school hours. We are hoping to see more children settled and being helped by these sessions in the future.
Parents of the residential program at CLAPS were addressed by Lakshmi Sudhakaran, with some inputs from Vasudha, looking at a smooth transition, from school to their new premises. We wish the group good luck and assure them of our continued support

Field trip
Field trip
VTU and YES trainees had their first combined field trip October 27, 2021. 31 of us including staff and trainees took a trip to St. Thomas Mount and spent the morning there. We took up a small challenge of climbing the 120 odd steps to reach the hilltop and were delighted that all of us could do so with ease.
We enjoyed the view from the hilltop and were lucky enough to see a couple of flights takeoff from Anna Airport. We then visited the church and spent a few minutes in complete silence. Later, we had sandwiches in a big hall and enjoyed the breeze for some time before returning to our respective centres for lunch.
