Celebrations always bring a special joy to us. So we try to integrate it along with our therapies to bring in learning and participation .From this Academic year, we decided that we would celebrate the festivals and National days involving our kids. We also planned to decorate the place with things related to the festival. We planned for coloring, pasting, cutting activities for the children. The children were also taught some games related to these festivals. The costume for the same was also decided and informed to the parents. During this month, we celebrated Independence Day and Onam.
The children came dressed in white, orange and green and were given the national flag to pin it up on their dress. Then they were said dialogues that were taught to them, sang songs. They were given small gifts and it was really a happy celebration.
For Onam, the staff and students were involved in making a pookalam, and the whole area wore a festive look. The students and teachers all dressed in Kerala attire was a real feast to the eye. A creative pookalam was made by the children using blocks!! This was of course adhering to the safety protocols. Hoping that the Pandemic would retreat soon and pave the way for us to have more celebrations with full joy and enthusiasm!
Little changes can make a big difference - Arun Kumar,Therapist
Master Yeschwanth was 3 years 4 months old, when he came to our centre. He is a child with Down's syndrome and had speech and developmental delays.
For the last six years, he has been given physiotherapy and remedial assistance. And he has shown improvement in many areas except for his flat feet and muscle weakness. His walking had a slap noise. Observation were made by the therapist and parents were asked to buy customized shoe to enhance his walking.
Yeschwanth had difficulty in walking, climbing stairs and in balance co-ordination.
Certain changes were made in Yeschwanth's therapy plan like :
● Toe standing – 10 mins
● Backward walking
● External arch support walking
● Single leg weight bearing in balance board and other activities
Now Yeschwanth is able to walk, run, able to walk in narrow beam balance and trying to balance and stand in imbalance surfaces.

This Independence Day was celebrated differently in KLC. In a fantastic initiative taken on behalf of the students mainly on the suggestion of Sai Hariharan a student of Senior School, a beautiful musical video was released entitled 'Finding Freedom'! This was represented by all the three units of V-Excel in Chennai and took about ten days of hard work to release it on the occasion of 15th August 2021. The link of the video is here and please do watch it. It has received rave reviews and has more than 1500 views on YouTube. We congratulate and acknowledge the work put in by Neha Bharadwaj in a rare unifying gesture of everyone in V-Excel. Please do pay special attention to the words written by our students and the introduction by Sai.
Krishna Jayanti was celebrated with the few children who are attending school. Pot breaking, decorating the classrooms as Mathura, Brindavan and scenes from his life being chronicled as stills, teachers dressed in blue and yellow, sharing food. Also, for those online in a beautiful sharing came a word association game with Krishna. It was wonderful to see the various ways Krishna is present in our lives.
Raksha Bandhan, tying of strings on each other's wrists to signify brotherhood was celebrated with students amongst each other and with the teachers.
Onam, the day which should be celebrated as a sensory integration day has been a popular celebration in the months of August and September. The calm created by the colourful flowers, the regular patterns in the Poo Kolam, the fragrance, sight of teachers in pure white sarees swaying to rhythmic beats and dancing is a moment to behold and can see the senses of the children absorbing and assimilating it deeply. It's the best sensory integration that can happen and we all look forward to this annual celebration.
Nature study:
For continuing education of the teachers, this month the nature study which started a few weeks ago really bore fruit. There was lots of sharing, drawing, understanding, observation all towards developing our own senses to look beyond the physical and to be able to witness something that is not visible but available to us only when we develop our organs of intuition and imagination. The second chapter of the book Children with a difference was under discussion and the nature study was a part of this Friday Study group.

Erode
Greetings from all of us at Erode center!
Every celebration can be made into a learning and joyous experience for our students if we do a proper planning. We had decided that the theme for every month would be the festivals or events that occur during the month. The special educators and the therapists plan their sessions in such a way that every child gets some learning and facts about that festival.
For this Independence day, we prepared our pre vocational children for a small talk on Independence day and Dr. A. P. J. Abdul kalam. Our students, Ahamed suhail sang a national song. Our Early Intervention children were taught craft work like folding and cutting color papers and were actively engaged in coloring the flags and decorating the place.
Sharing some AHA moments:
Child Kavin.P aged 15 yrs. an LD student, is coming from Nov 2017. Initially he was not able to identify basic academic skill like colors, shapes, money concept, time concept and numbers even difficult to readeven simple 3 letter words. The first of our monthly field trips for the vocational training unit commenced on August 31, 2021 with a visit to the Rail Museum, ICF, Perambur. This was the first outing after 1.5 yrs of lockdown.
The visit commenced at the photo gallery which had a pictorial display of the railway system in India. The teachers explained every image and a few trainees were able to relate their personal train travel experiences. We rode on the model train and saw different models of steam engines, inspection engines, electrical engines and sculptures made out of scrap materials. There were also models of different varieties of coaches.
We had lunch on the museum lawns and saw a beautiful miniature model of engines and tracks and the track switching system. We thank the officials of the Rail Museum who were very courteous and gave special discounts for our trainees.
The orientation programs and functional academics have contributed a lot to the comprehensive learning of each trainee. For instance, trainee Pranav suddenly left the group and started walking towards the restroom after seeing the sign board. After using the restroom, he independently walked back to the group. The success of functional academics lies not in just sitting in a class but to be able to use other senses to listen and process.
Similarly, trainee Hariharan saw a swing and said to the lady occupying it, 'Ooonjal'. In response, the lady gave up the swing to him for his enjoyment. We were encouraged that he was able to express his wants to a stranger without hesitation.
These experiences are gained through regular social exposure and academic classes.
