Kaleidoscope Learning Centre
From Gita Bhalla's Desk
This was a month of home visits, celebrations and a few special moments.
Home visits:
November brought with it some added confidence and a few more parents ventured to send their children to different programs. One barrier that was broken was with house visits. A few teachers and students met and the students felt totally rejuvenated and emotional and very happy when they were invited to spend some time with their beloved teachers in their homes. Aquila and Niharika went to Usha's home and spent a few hours with her. They did some craft, drew and painted and were very happy to see each other in a place other than their own home. Usha spent some memorable activity filled moments with them.
Chinmayee an ex-student of V Excel met up with Neha, Puja and Gita in Bangalore. Again the delight, the sheer experience of being in familiar land with known faces brought so much joy to the parents, teachers as well as Chinmayee himself. Very sweetly he told us that V Excel had prepared him for his future and that he was ready to embrace it. He was ready to meet the world and was eager to explore, travel and sing. It was a heart touching experience to see the trust of Malathi and Suresh the parents and Chinmayee towards the organisation.
On another occasion Akshay Nathan visited Neha and Puja's home and told them that he was delighted to be seeing them and that he missed coming to school. He was enjoying going to the farm and was happy that the decision to open school was going to be put into practice the coming week.
Celebrations:
Students shared photographs of their Diwali celebrations at home. On November 12th, many parents and teachers along with the children, met on a zoom session. They all lit lamps and candles and brought in Diwali in a beautiful yet sombre manner singing light filled songs in many languages.
This was followed by Karthigai Deepam where again the beauty of the lamps competed with the shining hearts that lit those lamps.
Children have started making Christmas decorations under the supervision of their teachers.
Special moments:
A few extra special moments in KLC. Tabitha our young teacher went out of her way to connect with Bhuvan who has not been well and sang for him exclusively one afternoon.
Niharika made a beautiful card for Shambhavi, Usha's granddaughter when she visited her and was neatly illustrated with motifs from nature and her home. But the drawing and writing was a great effort and it was an achievement of sorts. And overall, an inclusion story which is organic and natural.
Another child's hand work which needs a mention is Keshav, with whom his teacher Arul has been working steadily and sincerely and Keshav has managed to make a garland for the Gods at home.
Reading with parents, teachers, with children continues. More on reading in the next update.

Warm greetings from the VRC/BLA team
It is a pleasure to share with you the achievements and happy moments of November. We are sure that all of you are doing fine.
November was a month of celebrations!
Celebrations:
It was a double dhamaka for the students on 7th November 2020. Yes, both Children’s Day and Diwali were celebrated online by our students and teachers for about two hours.
Diwali means lights and sweets. So the students were given two tasks, one to prepare sweets without using fire and then paint a set of lamps.
Children and teachers were dressed in their colourful attire. One student came dressed like Chacha Nehru and wished all the children for Children’s Day. It was a pleasure to hear his confident speech.
The children came up with various ideas to prepare sweets. They prepared the sweets with the help of their parents and each one enjoyed doing it onscreen. Later each one was given a chance to speak about their sweet – the name, ingredient and how they did it.
The second task was to paint two lamps as colorfully as possible; with the able guidance of the teacher, the children quickly completed the task and displayed their ware.
IT was followed by a group song led by our unit head Mrs. Lekshmi Ramesh. As usual we all enjoyed every bit of the singing.
The meeting ended with the students thanking their teachers and also exchanging wishes. We felt happy as we had accomplished it all online!
Diwali celebrations at our Sharadha Centre:
Some of our students and staff celebrated Diwali by drawing colorful roangolis and lighting bright lamps in our centre. Ofcourse social distancing, wearing a mask were all followed.
These clebrations brought a change in our daily routines, helped us to mingle and spend some time together and also learn that festivals are all about sharing and caring for each other.
Our online classes:
Online classes continue for the students. Sometimes the students are grouped together and activity based learning is taught. In one such class students of primary NIOS learnt about the uses of water, how water dissolves various elements, etc based on their curriculum. The teachers are doing their best to make the classes interesting, informative and enjoyable.
Last month we spoke on how to model good behaviour, this month let us see about how to bring about a routine .
Why routine?
Routine is very important to sensitise children about the importance of managing time, doing activities in a phased manner, to reduce anxiety, to learn to appreciate the task they are performing.
How to go about it?
Draw a SMART plan. One which is suitable and simple, manageable and measureable, acheivable and accountable, reasonable and realaxing, Time bound and tangible.
How is it useful?
• It helps parents to make daily functioning more manageable and helps both parents and children to focus on one thing at a time.
• Helps to focus and achieve.
• Reduces distraction.
• More success in perfoming daily activities.
• Finally – helps in consistent improvement of the child in all aspects, brings about a sense of satisfaction and happiness for the parent.
So parents use your own intuitions, experience and creativity to create routines for yourself and your family. Happy parenting.
With this we sign off and hope to see you all soon with our December achievements.
Vocational Training Unit
From Usha Rajagopal's Desk
New trainee Supraja joined and was there till half day. She got adapted immediately and started participating in activity.
Sanitary pad unit was in full operation and production was ongoing along with trainees Sriram, Gazali, Sailakshmi and Pranav.
It was a happy moment when Saravana Prabu father called to inform us that they have set a small shop in their residential premises for him. He will take care of the shop from 12.30 to 6 pm. He is now a self employed young adult with special needs.
Trainees Rishi and Aditya left for the farm and from this month onwards it will be 3 days in a week.
Vivikta Naturals gave packing of body wash powder along with the materials.
We have registered Mr. Manivannan for AAVID – a curated 13-day program on “How to plan curriculum for a Teenager (for special needs). This program focuses on individual/group consultancy to understand the needs of your teen(s), framing checklists, design and execute goals with innovating strategies. Manivannan has been assigned two trainees Sailakshmi and Rahul.
We lit the lamps on the eve of diwali and prayed for the health of the world.
Usha and Charu along with Lekshmi Ramesh had meeting with Divya’s parents to discuss about the assessment done for Divya to pursue NIOS. But as she is good and interested in lots of hand activities. She can slowly be transited from online class to Srirangam vocational center. Parents to go and have a tour of the center and get back to us.
Training on independent travelling for Gazali started and trainee Sriram was connected as they share the same route. Manivannan follows in his two-wheeler and waits till his parent come to the bus stop to pick him.
Trainee Sailakshmi usually gets attached or obsessed with one vocation. So with planning and intervention, we introduced her to jute braiding, stitching the braids onto the mould for pen stand, groundnut deshelling and sanitary pad assembly. She did show some behavior issues, but we made all the teachers to be firm and speak the same language. Within 2 days she started learning the activities and became independent in 2 days which was very surprising and learning for us. She is able to assemble 20 pads in ½ hour and stitch the pen stand in 2 days.
It was nice to see Sailakshmi doing independently the assembly work in SN.
Carpentry class everyday for few trainees, Vishal, Aditya, Pranav and Rishi.
Aditya Mohan and Rahul started working in sanitary pad unit and was able to pick up the assembly line.
Radha, Uma and trainee Sriram started the pilot program of Sol Arc’s Pathway to Digital workshop on retailing and hospitality.
SNEH – PRODUCT HUB for special needs institutions was placing order to print block printing on the material provided by them. Every week we receive 5 mtrs of gada cloth and they will mention the colour and design. Teacher Shanthi along with Chandra and Supraja gives training every day on block printing. The concept of the hub is to training along with production.
Trainee Mahesh joined after the lockdown after a long gap. He got held up in his village due to COVID-19. He was still attending online class till last week. He was very happy to be in the classroom and meeting his peers. He started the work without any hesitation and with full enthusiasm.
Youth Empowerment Services
From Rama Nagarajan's Desk
As the pandemic situation is slightly getting better, with lots of optimism, we are striving hard to bring back the routine in all possible ways. Thus November 2020, started with a positive note. We saw a few more trainees attending the centre. This motivated us to further redefine and restructure our training program which was going on for the past 8 months.
Key highlights of the month November 2020
• Resumption of Tiffin Times food truck operations.
• Hands on training started for the trainees attending the centre.
• Online sessions (group and one on one) had to be continued to accommodate the trainees not attending the centre.
• More trainees started coming in to the centre.
• Celebrations – Diwali
• Production – Kocoatrait, SNEH
• Pathways – Pilot program.
• Participation in the SNEH monthly review meeting.
Resumption of Tiffin Times food truck operations.
Our mobile food truck Tiffin Times resumed its operations in the month of November 2020. After many rounds of meetings and discussions we had the MoU signed with M/s. Judie’s group who will be the operating partner for V-Excel. This MoU came into effect from 01 November 2020. On 09 November 2020, a soft launch was done at YES.
Hands on training started for the trainees attending the centre.
As we have a few more trainees, hands on training for these on various activities started in the month November. Training on Art and Crafts, Laundry and Chocolate making resume after a long break. Trainees were grouped These trainees were actively involved many activities like folding and pasting chocolate wrappers, diya painting, coconut shell polishing and laundry.
Online sessions (group and one on one) had to be continued to accommodate the trainees not attending the centre.
For those trainees who are not able to attend the centre, online sessions on OT sessions, skill development, vocational academics and computer skills were continued.
In OT our November month saw a complete recap of all the exercises and activities that were done so far.
In the skill development, trainees are divided into 2 groups. The topic chosen for the month of November was Travel. The topic was discussed in elaborate manner with the help of simple activities like drawing, writing and sharing their experience. This was done separately for the 2 groups and reinforced during the combined session.
In Vocational academics, the money concept which was going on for the past couple of months successfully got completed and revision of time concept was taken. Follow up on the vocational academics happened at the centre for the trainees coming in person also.
In computer skills most of the trainees are in the fag end of the curriculum. Revisions and recap sessions are going on for those who need it.
More trainees started coming in to the centre.
We now have a few more trainees attending the centre. In spite of the inclement weather conditions, we have a reasonably good attendance at the centre. This brings us a lot of hope that in coming months, normal operations can become a reality.
Celebrations
Diwali and Birthdays
On 13 November 2020, we celebrated Diwali at the centre. It coincided with our trainee Harish’s birthday. He shared sweets with all and as a special gesture, his peer Ramanathan made a beautiful card for Harish. For Diwali trainees made a beautiful poster and flag banner and posed for a photograph. Sweets were distributed to all the staff.
Two more trainees also celebrated their birthdays at the centre with their friends by sharing sweets, cupcakes and chocolates.
Production – Kocoatrait, SNEH
Kocoatrait – For Kocoatrait chocolate wrappers for 4 different varieties were printed in the month of November.
SNEH – For SNEH, 50 diyas were painted beautifully for Diwali orders. We also completed an order for 2 kgs of assorted chocolates and delivered 28 polished coconut shells.
Pathways – Pilot program.
4 trainees and 1 trainer were chosen for the pilot program conducted by Sol’s ARC. Apart from the trainer unit head and coordinator have also enrolled in this program to understand its feasibility for our trainees. The duration of this course is roughly about 6 weeks and regular updates and follow up sessions are happening with the trainees and the staff.
Participation in the SNEH monthly review meeting.
Vocational coordinator participated in the monthly review meeting of SNEH. The discussion was about products and production planning for the ongoing festive season. Many ideas have come up for increasing the product range and capacity building.
With super good vibes, November has come to an end and we, at YES, strongly believe that next few months there will be a beautiful beginning of things post this difficult situation.
