This month two major activities took place in Counselling Department. One was the the first of the parents group took place this month with VTU parents. It was a small group and the focus was to create avenues for the parents to look at themselves as an individual apart from parents of so and so. The second group is scheduled for November with both the VTU as well as YES parents.
The second activity was the second module of the first batch of the program Heart of the Matter with high school teachers. The second module focused on various mental health issues faced by high school students, how to identify those life-skills training, creating safety awareness regarding social media presence and net security, sex and sexuality education, teachers inner work.
The program was received with a lot of enthusiasm, and teachers felt they feel a little more equipped to handle behavioural issues in class in a different manor and they have learnt to listen a little more empathetically.
Apart from these our regular programs with various departments continued. The individual play, art ,music therapy with children from KLC and group play therapy with KLC continued. Wilbarger Brushing Protocol
What is a sensory brush?
- A sensory brush looks like a surgical scrub brush, (or) a brush used to remove corn silk from a corncob.
- A sensory brush (or) brushing program is often indicated for paediatric clients that have sensory dysfunction such as tactile sensitivity, hyper activity, (or) general sensory disregulation.
What are the benefits of sensory brushing?
- It can help Children who engage in unsafe (or) undesired behaviours (or) are sensory seeking. Brushing can help children who are slow to start (or) overly cautious and those that are picky eaters. Paediatric clients may benefit if they struggle with poor motor coordination (or) balance issues.
Some of the benefits of using sensory brushing are that it improves:- - Focus
- The ability to handle new situations
- Self-awareness
- Self-organization
- Self-control
- It can increase a child’s ability to optimize their arousal and activity levels as well as decrease sensory defensiveness. The Wilbarger brushing protocol involves the sensory brush, paired with joint compressions, completed in a sequence and according to a schedule.
- It can be done at school and home and should be carried out as part of a healthy sensory diet, several times per day.
What are the Wilbarger brushing protocol instructions?
By rubbing the brush across the skin, the pressure input target touch receptors and helps a child organize his/her central nervous system. This can calm down any over active receptors that are misfiring and help bring a child’s level of alertness to a normal (calm) level.

The school closed for the first term break on the 8 th of October after a small traditional Golu celebration with the customary song and dance.
On the 2 of October, the parent body of V-Excel under the leadership of Dhanam felicitated the teachers of the organisation . It was a touching tribute from the parents to the caretakers in school and the teachers all took back gifts and gratitude and blessings galore. There was high tea and games an a few performances and all in all a special day created by the parents for the teachers in school. We acknowledge and appreciate the effort.
The most stable and useful program that has been running through the month has been the farming vocation which happens with an overnight stay every week, at the Sreyes farm under the care of our trustee Mr. Rajagopal and Usha. The senior school regulars are learning a lot incidentally and through direct instruction. What's interesting is the other classes who visit the farm as a field trip and this month saw two classes , grade 4 and grade 2 visiting the farm and enjoying their day out besides some natural sensory integration happening through touching grass, cow dung, mud and sand! Lots of ideas are still emerging and we are looking forward to our continued work at the farm. Produce from the farm has been coming up to Sharda and the parents and some lucky teachers have been partaking of the vegetables grown with organic inputs.
Senior School students put together their thoughts about the practical work on fire, which has been their topic of study in this block. The students came out with descriptions of the colour of the flame, smell when burning, sound that they heard, whether the material burnt easily or had difficulty in burning - fresh leaves, dried leaves, flowers, twigs, feather, paper, cloth, stone, seeds etc. The result came out through various forms. Also, most students have succeeded in achieving a calm meditative state by looking at the flame of a candle for a few moments in silence. Photographs of the board work as well as group work are enclosed. It's wonderful to see dimensions of learning that happen when some topics are taken with great participation of all senses and in a imaginative and cooperative way.

Children our greatest teachers……..
Special Educator Divya narrates her learning with a very enthusiastic and happy tone as if she really achieved a gold medal. During her remedial sessions with Harshitha, does not sit in one place and is very difficult for her to pay attention for more than 10 minutes, she narrated a story "The Sun". initially she told without any interest, and any materials. Harshitha was not able to remember nor recall the story. Then, the teacher used, few animals, sand, some cloth to represent sun and other things and made the story little livelier and more visual. Harshitha was glued at one place and was also able to recall the story after a week.
This was indeed a joyful experience for the teacher and the student to celebrate. The quote by Ignacio Estrada, "If a child cant learn the way we teach, then teach the child the way they learn".

In the month of October 2018, our children in OUTREACH REMEDIAL CENTER, was introduced to Abacus for improving memory and math skills.
To improve the child’s memory, especially when it comes to improving skill sets in math for children with dyscalculia. Our team tried to understand what working and visual spatial working memory is. Working memory is the ability to store and manage information in one’s mind for a short period of time. Visual spatial working memory on the other hand is memory that is associated with what we see in your daily lives. This type of memory is the memory that directly correlates to child’s performance in math. There are many ways to boost and improves one’s working memory. The abacus is one of the oldest calculation tools with columns of beads that can be used to add, subtract, multiply and division.
The most powerful learning occurs when we use different areas of the brain. When students work with symbols, such as numbers, they are using a different area of the brain than when they work with visual and spatial information, such as an array of dots. The abacus and its beads provide a visual representation for children to utilize when they are doing problems. The hand movements and methods ultimately cause more synapses to form in the brain, and the more connections that are made, the greater level of learning that is taking place. The abacus is not only improving working memory but it also makes math, fun and exciting for a child.
