Academy of Teaching Excellence
From Meera Suresh's Desk
This month has been a silent month for ATE. Since we are coming to the end of Batch 1, more concentration is on Course completion. Mobilization work is going on earnestly.
Pamphlets have been put up at the Employment exchange office at Santhome High Road. We have visited around 20 schools. Responses in a few schools have been positive. Will be following it up. Guru Nanak College, Chellammal College and Jain Vidyashram School have shown positive responses.
Sincere training and attention is being given to Mr. Harish Kalyan with the necessary need-based guidelines from Parimal. APN Sir (Anandapadmanaban) as he is known at V-Excel has taken a break from the ATE team due to health reasons.
The second Internal Assessment test has been postponed due to rain further date will be informed and the question papers are being made in earnest by the faculty members. Team ATE is in the process of making the necessary seating arrangements as well as getting the answer sheets ready for the tests.
We have given an advertisement at Press Trust of India for mobilization. Have registered at the local post-office and have got a Post Box Number for sending out course details through inland mail.
Counseling & Assessments
From Parimal Pandit's Desk
Counselling:
"You are not alone"...
A message which needs to be spread to the young as we face the challenge of teen depression and suicides and its becoming a crisis. The Live Love Laugh Foundation project 'You are not alone..' for highschool and college students which V-Excel is partnering with is developed out of the same concerns regarding the mental health of youth today.
As part of the project we have covered two schools so far and the response has been encouraging. Children do have questions, worries and concerns which they are seeking help with but they need an unconditional listener. We hope to build that with this project.
Other updates from the Counselling department
- We had four new clients for counselling and 6 clients for counselling. we had 5 counselling desks in two companies where we were able to meet 11 employees. The usage was less due to festival times.
- We had six consultations last month and five assessments. A few of the consultations were for KLC admissions. Have inquiries for BLA and VTU admissions and we will be scheduling the consultations soon.
- We had our monthly inservice for the department. Our Senior psychologist who is also a trained Family Therapist, Sushama introduced us to Family Therapy. It was interesting to learn about different theories and schools within the Family Therapy model. As we work a lot with parents and support system of children and young adults with special needs the understanding of family patterns and how to untangle those was very useful.
- Three of us attended the Inner Child inservice conducted by Dr. Vasudha. IT was a very informative and wonderful session.
KLC
:
We had our individual and group music, healing, art, communication sessions with 18 children, had their usual play therapy group sessions. Fourteen teachers were met for curriculum guidance and personal work over a few sessions. Three parents were met. We met with the coordinators to understand the need and schedule sessions according to the priority.
YES
:
Twenty-nine trainees were met for individual sessions for art, counselling, guidance over many sessions. The trainees now feel free to ask for help and understand what are these sessions for. Puja had one group therapy session. Eight parents were met by our psychologists to review and understand their concern as well as guide them in handling the trainees at home.
Puja Bhalla adds
Small is Beautiful
It's heartening to watch children and adults bloom with just a little bit of art, colour and music.,
A student at YES, at first was shy, reticent and reluctant to change his schedule and come for individual art therapy sessions. He came with one description from his teachers - he didn’t show much enthusiasm and will to do anything on his own.
It was interesting to watch him transition from anxious eyes to watch joy emerge in his eyes, smile and enthusiasm when he saw two colours mix to create a third. It is something so small that goes unnoticed by most people, but he watched it with so much wonder that he asked and craved for more. More secrets to discover...And at the end of the first sessions he stated he wanted to create a rainbow - the eternal representation of hope!
Within a few sessions, his theme of rainbows, experimentation with colour progressed to create landscapes, tell stories and initiate conversations out of the rainbow colours. For a boy who needed reassurance for every move and security, it was heartwarming to see him explore his freedom with the brush with such enthusiasm.
Sometimes therapy sessions are well planned but sometimes they are born from the smallest moments. Grade Seven at KLC was studying water and while they were getting ready for a music session, the sound of water being poured into a glass gave the therapist another idea. Soon glasses, jugs and a tub filled with water was brought. The sounds of water being poured, splashed, mixed formed the melody of a River Symphony that emerged from the group, enunciated with the gentle lyre and xylophone and bells. The students were encouraged not only to participate in creating the music but also stop and listen. The result of the session was incredible peace, calmness and a feeling of being transported to the Himalayan streams.
VTU
:
In VTU the counsellors met 13 trainees for individual sessions and 2 group therapy sessions were conducted. In group therapy now the students are settling and enjoying group activities. Four parents and three teachers were met. Planning an inservice for the teachers to teach movement exercises for the young trainees. A review was conducted with Usha regarding counselling and what was needed for each individual trainee so that it could be addressed in the sessions.
VRC & BLA
:
Five children were seen over repeated sessions for play therapy from VRC. One group therapy session was taken. From BLA two children were met for individual art and counselling sessions and seven over 4 group therapy and personality development sessions. They enjoy playing games during those sessions and sharing. Filled with celebrations of Diwali and joy this month passed very quickly. The arrival of North east monsoon created cheer and lets hope we are blessed with continuation of the rains. Wishing everyone a productive and exciting month ahead.

School reopened for Term 2 on the 3 of October 2017. On Vijayadashami day on the 30 of September, a few teachers along with the administrative staff at Sharda, ushered in the new academic auspicious beginning. New students are usually welcomed and this term a new Teacher Shalini Sharma joined us this term. We hope that she is here to stay and wish her warmly for choosing to be with KLC.
The new term saw the regrouping of students so that they can learn a new vocation and new blocks were started for all classes.
Blue Sky Choir
On 5 October the Blue Sky Choir was invited by Pathshala, the Krishnamurthi school in Tiruvallur. It was an uplifting experience for both the receivers and the givers as there was an understanding and acceptance beyond words and gestures from the students of the school. In our collective experience we have not experienced young students envy our students for being free, uncluttered and totally living with their original skins on! Observations that even great philosophers would fail to note. Students from the choir spent a day eating, walking, watching, interacting with the students of Pathshala and it was indeed a rich exchange on both ends.
On the 6th of October the staff of V-Excel had an opportunity to listen to a two hour workshop held by Dr. Vasudha Prakash who spoke about the "Inner Child". This was an enriching, informative and very interesting afternoon when we got to listen to various subjects from woman’s health, to adult behaviour to differences in the worlds of men and women . Thank you Vasudha for the wonderful afternoon.
The AIMS media conducted their first formal test for the students of the second batch and the parents, teachers and students were all surprised, pleasantly indeed, that they scored encouraging grades .
A proposal for Cafe Samarth on Wheels was put up to the managing trustees as our students are now ready to take up their cooking adventures to the next level.
Field trips galore!
Most of the classes have been for many field trips this month. Grade 4 in their Geography block took a train trip in the MRTS trains upto the beach station. They also went to the temple on North Mada street, Grade 5 went to the beach to experience the different kinds of landforms of India, feel sand to understand deserts, coastlines. They also visited Theosophical gardens to experience coconut picking of Kerala, climb St. Thomas Mound. Grade 7 who were doing a Water block went on a rainy day to the beach, visited a rain water harvesting plant , and created a River Symphony with sounds of Water and a few musical instruments. In the chemistry block , crystals were grown in a jar and examined by the students. Grade 6 was experiencing life in Rome. So the corridors of the school saw toga clad Romans, wreath clad Greeks from Grade 5A, and gladiator battles. These simulations and experiences are richly assimilated by the students besides creating a fun opportunity for students and teachers alike!
Our heartfelt gratitude to Ramesh, who demonstrated the use and advantages of the new email platform - Office 365 to all the teachers of KLC. It was well received and we hope that it makes the work of writing reports much easier between the class teachers and mentors, apart from the mail's easy usage.
In the teachers meeting on Friday, we had Child Study of Gracia a Grade 5B students, but this was re-visiting study. Kavitha presented the child study to all the teachers.
On the 21st, after the mentors met their respective class teachers, we had an in service by Parimal. This was on the interesting topic of trials namely the air, Water and fire trials that we have gone through in life. It was both experiential and reflective. The second part is yet to follow and we look forward to it, and the teachers felt that a lot of sharing took place which both distresses as well as makes connections in the group. Thank you dear Parimal for sharing your expertise with us.

A Trek to Kolli Hills
Our Disha Parent’s forum organised trekking for their special children and parents to Kolli Hills. The trek was organised by Mr. Meiyappan who is a professional trekking organisor. Twelve families with their wards along with 2 special teachers had a great time with different experiences and bonding with each families. One parent Mr. Elango shared his experience:
How to name this?
Really don't know how to name this experience of 12 special families with 2 special teachers joining together on a trip to Kolli hills for 4 days.
Awesome? Wonderful? Emotional? Fantastic?
Must be all combined together.
Children enjoyed every bit of travel and the site visits. Preethi and Kailash both were insisting the driver to play songs and clapping, dancing during throughout the travel.
The dominance and courage shown by Vishnu & Kailash on their stage performance on the penultimate day was marvellous.
The tenacity exhibited by all the parents and children in managing those 1000 steps to reach to enjoy the Ahayaganga falls is a standing example of the fighting spirit of the families. We literally felt the presence of Almighty, when we were under the falls and those tiny particles of waterspray flashed on us, with that thumping noise of falling water.
The arrangements and the itinerary planned by Mr Meyappan was flawless and fitted so well to us. Mutual voluntary help by every parent to other families was so natural and our dream to have a community living was trial run in these 4 days. A special appreciation to the hospitality shown by the hotel Silverline retreat.
The local man Thangaraj and team, the van drivers are so kind towards the entire team. Those evenings where all the families played together with random games are immemorable.
It was so spontaneous that Ponrajam, Bharathi and Ambujam started chanting Sivapuranam in the forest, and the whole team was mesmerised. Seriously waiting for the announcement for the next trip."
