Early Intervention and V-Excel Remedial Centre
From the staff of Early Intervention and V-Excel Remedial Centre
Greetings from Early Intervention and the Remedial Unit!
OUTREACH PROGRAM IN SCHOOLS
The month of August saw the Outreach team deepen its involvement with remedial activities for Grades 6–8. A training session on remediating higher grades was conducted by Mrs. Lekshmi Ramesh, offering an interactive space where fresh ideas surfaced and reflected the team's enthusiasm and commitment.
August also marked the resumption of counselling sessions across the outreach schools. An initial screening to assess emotional quotient, social quotient, and adversity quotient was conducted at Sri Sankara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thoraipakkam, for children under intervention in Grades 3–5. The screening was administered by Mrs. Sumathi Srinivasan, Mrs. V. Brindha, and Mrs. Nitya Venkatesh.
At the same school, a counselling session on Discipline and Responsibility was conducted by Mrs. Lekshmi Ramesh for Grade 11 students, at the school's request. Mrs. V. Brindha and Mrs. Nitya Venkatesh assisted with the session, which also saw the participation of Mrs. Kadhija from ATOS Foundation, our CSR partner.
Music found its way into the outreach schools as well, with Vocal & Percussion Guru Shri Anand Subramani initiating classes twice a week at Olcott Memorial School. While originally planned for children under intervention, the sessions were soon extended to include other musically inclined students from the older grades.
V-Excel Remedial Centre (VRC)
The VRC continued to support 4 children this month, each showing encouraging progress in their outcomes. A particular highlight was the camaraderie that grew among the children, along with a notable shift in behaviour in two of them, who learned to thaw the ice between them and build a more comfortable rapport.
Music sessions also stood out this month, with two children showing keen interest and enthusiasm to learn more.

August - The month of truth, freedom, and Grace!
August brought with it a rich variety of experiences at KLC. The month saw the school community come together through celebrations, music, art, learning opportunities and shared work. Students, teachers, caregivers, young adults and friends of KLC all found ways to participate, contribute, and celebrate alongside one another. Whether through a festival, a workshop, a performance, a creative project or a quiet moment of reflection, the month reminded us once again that learning and growth happen best within a caring and connected community.
A Celebration Led by the Friends of Dwarka
KLC celebrated Independence Day on 15th August at Sharada with a program planned by the Friends of Dwarka and their growing role within the KLC community.
The celebration began with the Friends being introduced by their teacher, who shared their journeys and spoke about the work they do within KLC. The audience was given an opportunity to understand how these young adults contribute to the community and the commitment they have shown to the space where they have grown and learnt over the years.
This was followed by the reading of the poem "Can You Hear Me?", written by a friend of KLC. The poem was translated and explained by one of our teachers and brought to life through movements and short scenes enacted by the vocational trainees and teachers. The presentation invited the audience to reflect on the voices, experiences, and aspirations of people who are often unheard.
The gathering then joined together in singing patriotic songs, with teachers, students and visitors participating enthusiastically.
A special highlight of the day was the participation of some of our young adults in sharing the products they have been creating. Preethi's Idli Kadai completed its first year on Independence Day, and idlis were made available to the gathering. Vishal and his teacher prepared millet ragi cookies and organic cakes, which were warmly received by those who attended.
The program concluded with the hoisting of the National Flag, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Snacks were then shared with everyone present.
It was a moving and patriotic celebration, made even more meaningful by the opportunity to recognise the Friends of Dwarka and their commitment to serving the community that has supported them over the years.
A Pookolam of Many Hands
Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, is celebrated to honour the annual homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali and to give thanks for a bountiful harvest.
At KLC, the celebrations began on 17th August, with small pookolams appearing across the school. Teachers and children worked together to decorate different spaces with flowers, bringing the colours and spirit of the festival into the building.
The celebrations culminated on 21st August when the entire school came together to create a large pookolam. Beginning with a simple outline, fresh flowers were added little by little until a beautiful design emerged. Every hand in the building seemed to find its way into the pookolam. Children, teachers, support staff, administrative staff, caregivers and even friends who happened to visit KLC that day added to the kolam. To create something beautiful. No single person created it; it grew through the contributions of many hands working together.
The celebration also included a traditional poojai with offerings made in the Kerala tradition. Students and teachers presented dance performances for the gathering, bringing music and movement into the festivities. In the kitchen, vellam paruppu payasam was lovingly prepared and offered as part of the celebration before being shared with everyone.
More than a festival celebration, the day was a reminder of the joy that comes when a community comes together to create, celebrate, and share.
Threads of Care and Friendship
Raksha Bandhan was celebrated at KLC on 28th August. Traditionally, the festival honours the special bond between brothers and sisters and celebrates the values of love, care, responsibility, and protection.
At KLC, these feelings extend beyond family relationships. A strong sense of friendship and brotherhood exists among the students, between students and teachers, and among the staff members who work together each day.
The celebration was marked by the tying of sacred threads, many of which had been lovingly prepared by the students and teachers in their classrooms. As the threads were tied, they became symbols of affection, trust and the promise to care for one another.
The warmth and joy of the occasion could be seen throughout the school. Students exchanged rakhis with great enthusiasm, and many of the bonds that already existed were strengthened through the celebration. New friendships were formed as well, adding another layer of connection within the KLC community.
The celebration served as a gentle reminder that caring for one another, looking out for one another and growing together are values that lie at the heart of the KLC community.
Celebrating 25 Years of V-Excel
As part of the culmination of V-Excel's 25th year celebrations, special poojai and homam were conducted at the Sharada building on 29th August. Staff members from the various Chennai units of V-Excel came together to participate in the prayers and mark this important milestone in the organisation's journey.
Many KLC staff members attended the event and joined in the celebrations, followed by a shared lunch.
Awaiting Krishna
At KLC, the arrival of Krishna is never confined to a single day. It brings with it a season of celebration that gradually unfolds across the school. Classrooms, corridors and activity spaces begin to change as different aspects of Krishna's life find expression in decorations, displays and creative activities. Little by little, the school transforms into a space that carries the spirit of Gokul and Dwarka, the places most closely associated with Krishna's childhood and life.
This year too, from the last week of August onwards, signs of the approaching celebration could be seen throughout the school. Every corner seemed to hold a small reminder of Krishna, lovingly created by students and teachers.
Perhaps the most delightful part of this season is the way it encourages us to notice the many "little Krishnas" around us. The playful smiles, mischievous antics, caring gestures and unexpected moments of joy shown by our students often remind us of the qualities associated with Krishna himself. During this time, teachers and staff find themselves watching for these moments, appreciating and celebrating them as they appear.
The celebrations formally began on 31st August and continued into the first week of September. We look forward to sharing more about the festivities, activities and special moments from this joyful celebration in our next issue of Strides.
Tarang – August
Our August Tarang program was held on 13th August, just ahead of Independence Day. The afternoon was filled with music as the team from Seetharam Events presented an instrumental concert for our students. We were also happy to have students from a few other special schools join us for the program.
The musicians played a variety of familiar tunes using the violin, flute, guitar, keyboard, and percussion instruments. The music was at times soulful, at times lively and energetic, and often invited the students to participate. Many responded with clapping, while others joined in by singing along to familiar songs. The interactive nature of the programme kept the students engaged throughout.
Sharing Our Art with the World
Three paintings created by our students were selected for "The First Circle", an online exhibition and publication project organised by Straight Circle India, an experimental project space that promotes inclusivity in art and wellness through art-making.
The selected works were: Rose of Love by Abhishek Sanyal, The Art of God by Sandhya , Sky Above Earth Below and Peace Within by Sabari
We were particularly appreciative of the care with which the organisers worked through every stage of the process. From registration and collecting details about the artists, to proofreading the information that would accompany the artwork online and sharing the inauguration message, the entire process was handled thoughtfully and professionally. The exhibition will continue to remain online for the next few months, allowing a wider audience to view and appreciate the work of the participating artists.
We are delighted that the work of our students was recognised and included in the exhibition. Adding to our joy, Sabari's painting was sold during the exhibition and the proceeds were sent to him.
Opportunities such as these help our students share their creativity with a wider audience and reinforce the value of their artistic expression. We are grateful to Straight Circle India for creating an inclusive platform where diverse artistic voices can be seen and appreciated.
Free Hands: A Space for Caregivers
Every Monday between 1.00 and 2.00 p.m., a quiet corner of KLC is transformed into a space for caregivers. Free Hands, facilitated by teachers Kavitha and Mahalakshmi, invites mothers, fathers, grandparents and other family members to spend an hour engaged in meaningful handwork and creative activity.
Participants work on activities such as stitching, knitting, doll making and felting. Through patient and careful work, beautiful creations gradually emerge. More importantly, the sessions offer caregivers an opportunity to step away from the demands of everyday life and spend some time caring for themselves.
The atmosphere is calm, welcoming, and unhurried. Participants work with their hands, share conversations, sing together, and enjoy each other's company. The emphasis is not on productivity alone, but on creating a space where caregivers can relax, unwind and experience the satisfaction that comes from making something beautiful.
The response to the sessions has been encouraging, with many caregivers choosing to attend regularly and looking forward to the continuation of the programme. Free Hands has become a special space where the hands and hearts that care for others are themselves nurtured and supported.
Nurturing the Caregivers
During August, three KLC teachers continued to participate in Therapeutic Painting sessions facilitated by an art therapist trained in the approach developed by Liane Collot d'Herbois.
The process begins with free paintings and charcoal work, through which the therapist observes and gains insights into the individual's present state. Based on these observations, a series of guided painting sessions is planned to support the person's own self-healing capacities and help bring greater balance and well-being.
Held twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, these sessions provide teachers with a quiet and reflective space away from the demands of the school day. The calm atmosphere, the process of working with colour and charcoal, and the gentle guidance of the therapist encourage self-reflection and inner awareness.
While each participant's experience is personal and unique, the sessions offer an opportunity to work with emotions, stress and inner experiences in a non-verbal and creative way. Through the process of painting, many participants find moments of quietness, relaxation and renewal.
As a school that is deeply committed to the well-being of both its students and staff, KLC continues to explore ways of supporting the people who care for others every day.
Returning Home
This month, we were happy to welcome back Aparna, a former KLC teacher who worked with us for nearly five years. Although she left the school several years ago, she has remained closely connected to the KLC community.
"KLC is my second home. How can I forget it?" She shared during her visit.
Moments like these remind us that the bonds formed at KLC often last long after people move on.
Looking Ahead
As we move into September, we look forward to more celebrations, workshops and opportunities for learning and sharing together. The month will also bring the term-end Individual Review Meetings, giving us an opportunity to meet with parents, reflect on each child's journey, and plan the way forward together.
We look forward to meeting many of you in the coming weeks and sharing more of the life and happenings at KLC.
