July.... When we finish a spiral, we learn to step into the next spiral of Life,
We turn and turn and turn and stop and then we start again...
July – Finding Our Rhythm
As the new academic year gathered momentum, July became a month of settling into a joyful and purposeful rhythm. Classrooms came alive with regular main lessons, creative work, and carefully planned monthly outings that brought learning beyond the school walls.
Alongside the daily rhythm of school life, the month was filled with graduations, internships, in-service training, workshops, and meetings with new parents, celebrations and new initiatives that strengthened our work with children, families and young adults. Each experience, whether big or small, added another step to the journey we continue to walk together.
Learning beyond the Classroom
As part of our commitment to experiential learning, each class now has a planned monthly outing connected to its Main Lesson. These experiences allow students to engage more deeply with what they are learning while building observation, social skills and a meaningful relationship with the world around them.
Our Grade 4 students, immersed in Norse Mythology, enjoyed two memorable outings this month. They explored Vandalur Zoo, spending an exciting morning observing animals, and enjoying the outdoors together. Later in the month, they visited a small hillock and lake at Thazhambur, where a gentle walk-through nature, quiet time by the water and lunch under the trees offered a peaceful and enriching extension of their classroom learning.
Both outings reflected the joy of learning through direct experience and thoughtful planning.
Our Grade 3 students enjoyed a visit to Tholkappiar Poonga, where they explored the ecological park's green spaces, nature trails, and play areas. The outing provided opportunities for movement, exploration and learning in a safe natural environment, with the park staff warmly supporting the children throughout their visit. After sharing lunch together, the students returned to school with many happy experiences from a day spent outdoors.
As part of their Main Lesson on Ponniyin Selvan and the Chola dynasty, our Vocational trainees visited the Kachabeswarar Temple in Kanchipuram and the town of Mahabalipuram. Both places have a rich connection with the Chola period, giving the trainees an opportunity to experience history beyond the classroom. Walking through these historic sites, observing the temple architecture and inscriptions, and listening to the stories connected with them made their learning more meaningful. The trainees thoroughly enjoyed the outing and returned with a deeper understanding of the Chola kings and their legacy.
Internship at KLC
We were delighted to welcome Vaishnav, a 21-year-old student from SRM College, who chose KLC for his two-week internship. During his time with us, he worked closely with our Vocational trainees, joining them in their daily rhythm, activities and learning experiences.
Vaishnav, who is himself on the autism spectrum, brought a unique understanding and sensitivity to his interactions with our trainees. Over the two weeks, it was heartening to see him grow in confidence, form friendships and become a valued part of the group.
Rites of Passage
One of the most special moments this month was the Rites of Passage ceremony for Salman and Raza, who have completed their journey in KLC's Vocational Program and are now moving on to Youth Empowerment Services (YES), a unit of V-Excel. Salman has been part of the KLC family for five years, while Raza has grown with us for the past nine years.
With their mothers, teachers and friends gathered around them, the ceremony marked not an ending, but the beginning of a new chapter. As they were warmly welcomed into the YES program, the entire school came together to celebrate this important milestone and wish them well.
We are proud of both these young men and wish them every success as they continue to learn, grow and contribute to their new environment.
Learning Together: Teacher In-service
As part of our ongoing teacher development, Gita led two in-service sessions during the month, encouraging teachers to reflect not only on what they do, but also on how they meet each child.
The sessions explored the importance of observation, self-awareness and thoughtful responses while working with children. Teachers to reflect on setting aside judgement, recognising their own reactions, communicating with care, and creating classrooms that are well prepared, engaging and responsive to the needs of every child. There was also a strong emphasis on helping students become increasingly independent in their daily activities.
These sessions continue to strengthen our shared understanding that the growth of the teacher is an essential part of the growth of the child.
Partnering with Families:
Growing Together: Understanding Children from 0–7 Years
As part of our new Early Childhood Program, KLC organised a parent workshop, "Understanding Young Children (0–7 Years): Building Healthy Foundations for Life," facilitated by Mrs. Gita Bhalla, Principal, KLC and Associate Director, V-Excel Educational Trust.
Nine parents participated in this interactive session, where they reflected on the unique journey of parenting and the importance of understanding the child beyond the challenges they face. Parents shared what they loved most about their children, as well as the difficulties and concerns they carried. Listening to one another helped them realise that they were not alone in their experiences.
The session concluded with an enthusiastic request from the parents for a follow-up series, as they expressed a desire to continue learning more about child development and ways of supporting their children with greater confidence and understanding.
Welcoming New Families
An interactive orientation programme for the new parents of KLC was held on 23rd July, introducing families to the school's philosophy and approach to supporting children.
One of the key ideas shared was that “the experiences we offer children each day become the foundation from which they learn, grow and express themselves.” At KLC, we believe that a child's rhythm, diet, environment and daily experiences all influence their well-being and learning. When these are healthy and consistent, children are often calmer, more engaged and better able to participate in everyday life.
The session also explored the importance of a strong partnership between home and school, introduced parents to the daily rhythm and practices of KLC, and provided time for questions and discussion with our senior teachers.
A New Vocational Initiative
A new vocational journey began this month with the guidance of Naina Shah, a friend of V-Excel, who generously shared her time-tested recipes for homemade pizza and pasta sauces. Working alongside our teachers, she helped prepare the very first batch—and it was a great success!
The plan is to gradually involve our older trainees in making these preservative-free sauces in small batches, helping them develop practical vocational skills while creating a wholesome product for the community. With Naina's continued support and distribution network, we are excited to see this initiative take shape.
Celebrating Vasanthi Aunty
One of the most memorable moments this month was our visit to Vasanthi Aunty, who has been part of the KLC family for over 20 years. Through her patient guidance in cooking and stitching, she has quietly helped many of our trainees grow in confidence and independence. Her influence continues to be seen in the lives of young adults like Rekha, now working confidently at Writers' Café, Salman, who has recently moved on to YES, and many others.
Since ill health has kept her away from KLC since December 2025, the entire KLC family—including teachers and support staff—visited her on 25th July. We spent time together, shared lunch, presented her with gifts and a note expressing our love and gratitude, and reminisced about the many years we have shared.
It was a day filled with smiles, tears, memories and heartfelt conversations. While Vasanthi Aunty was overjoyed to see everyone again, we were reminded once more of the quiet love, generosity and dedication she has given so freely to KLC over the years. It was truly a day to cherish.
Learning at Sreyes Farm
One of our experiential learning programmes restarted this month with weekly visits to Sreyes Farm in Red Hills. Every Tuesday, Manas and Aaron, accompanied by their teacher Rose Khan, spend the day working on the organic farm.
The trainees help with preparing the soil, planting, and other farm activities, while learning to work alongside the people at the farm. Through these experiences, they are slowly building confidence, responsibility and practical life skills.
The programme begins with weekly day visits and will gradually move to overnight and residential stays. These experiences help the trainees become more independent as they learn to live, work and care for themselves away from home.
Celebrating Aadi Perukku
The month of July ended with the joyful celebration of Aadi Perukku, a festival that expresses gratitude to nature and water for nourishing the earth and sustaining life.
Over the previous weeks, every class lovingly sowed nine varieties of seeds in small pots and watched them sprout into young green saplings which were brought down on 31st July, where the whole school gathered to celebrate this beautiful festival. The morning was filled with songs, dances, a special performance by our Vocational trainees, and a traditional sack race enjoyed by students and teachers alike.
Adding to the joy of the celebration, a few parents and grandparents joined hands to prepare traditional ragi kozhukattai for the entire school, making the occasion even more special.
It was a heart-warming morning—peaceful, joyful, and filled with togetherness and gratitude.
Fun Friday
The fifth Friday of the month is Fun Friday at KLC—a welcome break from the regular Friday routine of meetings, child studies, curriculum planning and text reading.
Teachers spent the afternoon enjoying games of Anthakshari, Kho-Kho and Dumb Charades, with plenty of laughter and friendly competition. The whole building reverberated with cheers, laughter and good-natured arguments over who was "out" and who was "not out" during the game of Kho-Kho! It was a joyful way to end the month and celebrate another curriculum block completed together.
A Visit Down Memory Lane
One of the most heart-warming moments this month was the visit of Hari Rajagopal, a former KLC student who left the school nearly fifteen years ago.
Hari had recently been speaking often about his teachers and friends at KLC, and while his family was in Chennai, his mother contacted us to ask if she could bring him back for a visit. We were delighted to welcome them.
Hari happily spent time meeting some of his old friends who are still with us, reconnecting with his teacher Kavitha, and walking through the school that had once been such an important part of his life. It was a simple visit, filled with smiles, memories and quiet joy.
For all of us, it was a gentle reminder that while students may leave KLC, the relationships they build here often remain in their hearts for many years.
As July comes to a close, we look forward to another month of learning, growth and shared experiences. Here's to an equally joyful and eventful August!
