Hands on Activities and Tools
In the month of January, the children in the Remedial Unit, engaged with hands-on activities and concrete tools to practise speaking, comprehension, vocabulary, sentence formation, math and self regulation skills.
Here are some of the activities which they have been working on:
Math with Base 10 Blocks
Base 10 blocks help children understand the concepts of place value, number sense, addition and subtraction. It is a useful concrete tool in the special education classroom. Many children enjoy using the blocks to solve math equations and problems.
Spot the Difference
In a spot the difference activity, children need to find the difference between two or more pictures. It supports children with mindful observation, vocabulary, sentence formation and comprehension skills.
Fraction Tiles
In the month of January, a child used fraction tiles to understand, compare and add fractions. He used the tiles to role play scenarios, which helped him understand that fractions are used in everyday life. It also expanded his imagination.
Creating soundscapes using musical instruments
During story time, the children used kartaal and egg shakers to create the scene. They used their creativity to create the sound of wind, water, rain and footsteps. This made reading enjoyable for the children.
Dramatic Play Kits
A child in the early years immersed himself in dramatic play. Kitchen sets, stuffed animals and legos develop children’s communication, speech and language, creativity, problem solving and executive functioning skills.
Mandala
Mandala art helps students with attention, self regulation skills and being in the present moment. It also improves cognitive and motor skills.

Every step forward is a step towards a brighter future.
January brings fresh energy and gentle new beginnings at KLC as we step into the third term filled with purpose and possibility. The month ahead is woven with meaningful curriculum work and deepened learning, enriched by our Anthroposophical Workshop at Vadodara, alongside in-service sessions for both learning and therapy for the teachers. As we settle into new rhythms, we also come together in celebration — welcoming Pongal with gratitude, joy, and a sense of community. January sets the tone for growth, reflection, and shared learning, grounding us for the journey ahead.
A warm meeting with an Alumna:
A special moment of reconnection unfolded this month as Namita, an alumna of KLC who had moved away 14 years ago as an adolescent, met her teachers at a function. She remembered each of them by name — a touching reminder of lasting bonds. Today, she carries herself with calm, confidence, and purpose. The meeting filled Namita, her mother, and her teachers with joy, and they warmly invited her to visit KLC the next time she is in town.
A recognition for the work happening:
On January 1, 2026, the Hamsadhwani R Ramachandran Award of Excellence was presented to V-Excel Educational Trust at the R Ramachandran Birthday Remembrance Event held at the Youth Hostel in Adyar, Chennai. The award was accepted by Dr. Vasudha Prakash, founder of V-Excel, in recognition of their 25 years of work in special education and supporting individuals with cognitive disabilities — a meaningful recognition of V-Excel’s journey and impact. As part of the V-Excel family, KLC teachers were present to support and cheer this special moment of recognition — sharing in the pride and joy of a meaningful milestone.
Celebrating Pongal – symbolizing renewal and abundance:
Pongal was celebrated in the traditional spirit at KLC, with a wood fire on an open stove, a beautifully decorated mud pot, and the joyful moment of milk boiling over — symbolising abundance and gratitude. The sweet Pongal was prepared with poojai, accompanied by songs, dance, and traditional games. Our students delighted in every part of the celebration, coming together to enjoy the occasion and sharing the sweet Pongal for lunch — a day filled with warmth, culture, and togetherness.
A month of collective Learning Through Healing, Reflection, and Art
Healing the Social: Where Learning Meets Community:
A few of the teachers of KLC attended Healing the Social – An Anthroposophical Conference unfolded as a deeply nourishing week of learning and connection from 10–17 January 2026 at Eklavya Model School, Maganpura, Gujarat. Guided by Dr. Michaela Glöckler’s lectures, whose lifelong work gently weaves together healing, education, and child development, participants were invited into spaces of reflection, movement, artistic expression, and shared dialogue. The conference was lovingly held by Dr. Lakshmi Prasanna, along with Dr. Swapna Narendra and the organising team — Dr. Lakshmi’s steady presence and heartfelt dedication created a warm, inclusive atmosphere where each participant felt welcomed and seen. Together, the community explored what it means to heal the social, leaving with renewed inspiration, inner grounding, and a deep sense of togetherness.
A Day with Wakako — Healing Through Clay, Colour, and Stillness:
A Day with Wakako Motoike, offered our teachers a quiet, deeply nourishing space to slow down and reconnect with themselves through therapeutic art. The workshop gently guided participants through clay modelling, charcoal work, and painting — inviting the hands to lead while the mind softened. As simple forms took shape and colours slowly emerged, a sense of calm and inner balance unfolded. The tactile experience of clay grounded the body, while painting and charcoal opened pathways for reflection and creative expression. It became a beautiful day of stillness, healing, and shared presence — leaving everyone feeling lighter, centered, and quietly uplifted.
Returning to Childhood — A Circle of Healing and Sharing:
An in-service session with Parimal Pandit, a long-time friend of KLC and therapeutic counsellor, offered teachers a gentle journey back into their own childhoods. Through drawing and reflection, they revisited the place of their birth — its landscape and weather — and recalled fresh memories from around the age of seven that had brought joy and meaning into their lives. As these moments were shared within the group, smiles surfaced, feelings were tenderly held, and connections deepened. It became a time of healing, open sharing, and quiet happiness — a beautiful reminder of how personal stories can nourish collective well-being.
Therapeutic Mandala Art Session:
The 5th Friday was dedicated to fun and mindful creativity. Mahalakshmi proposed an afternoon of focused calm, where teachers worked on pre-designed mandala patterns, filling them with colour using pencils, crayons, and sketch pens. The room soon settled into a quiet rhythm as everyone brought the designs to life.
After a week of hectic and emotionally demanding work, the activity proved deeply soothing. It was a clear hit — all the teachers appreciated the idea, and some were so inspired that they even took additional designs home to continue working on them.
Tarang for the Month – A Play with words – Antaakshari:
A lively afternoon of music and joy unfolded at Tarang, as Santhosh Subramanian and Pavithra Balajee led vocals, beautifully supported by Aravind Shankar on keyboard and Srihari Shankaran on percussion. Their scintillating Antaakshari-style performance — playful with words and songs — kept the audience in high spirits throughout, filling the space at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Mylapore with laughter, rhythm, and shared delight.
