August 2025 Strides for KLC

Beauty unfurls in murky water
August brings along a celebration of festivals – both regional and national, along with the regular curriculum and schedule. KLC provides its students with the full experience of celebration in essence, and cultural festivity. Usually, it is provided through the means of dance, drama, story, to make each one of them precious and enjoyable
Festivals – celebrated traditionally:
Aadi Perukku:
In the month of Aadi (Aashada) “Mulapari” - an ancient Tamizh ritual, where the 9 grains are soaked and sown in clay pots for them to sprout and grow for a week and then carried in a procession to a water body, symbolizing prayers for fertility, rain and good harvest, is done. This process was followed and it culminated on August 1st, on the Aadi Perukku day. Traditional games, dances, and tying of the sacred yellow thread on the wrist and finally immersing the grown molapari into water was performed.

Raksha Bandhan:
A Bond of protection, celebrating the love and bond between siblings, where a sacred thread is tied around the wrist to symbolize the prayers for their well-being and receive the gift of life-long protection. In KLC, this festival is celebrated between peers and teachers, in a spirit of universal brotherhood.

Krishna Jayanthi:
The birth of Gopala, Navanitachora, Jagannath, Dwarkadhish, Mukunda the all-knowing was celebrated for a whole week from August 11th- 15th, with each day dedicated to his names.
Gopala – Protector of the Cows:
Monday, 11th, with the colour of purple, we had a beautiful cow and her calf come to school to be worshipped, fed and revered by the students and staff

Navanitachora – The stealer of Butter:
Tuesday, 12th, with colours of Red and Yellow, we had Uri Adi – Pot breaking, where every student got a chance with the help of their teachers or alone, amidst cheering and rousing drums beating to encourage them.

Jagannath – Lord of the Universe:
Wednesday, 13th with the colour of Blue, we visited the Guindy Children's Park, where the students enjoyed nature, the quiet environment, played and spent time together.

Dwarkadhish – Lord of Dwarka:
Thursday, 14th, with the colour of orange, we performed a simple poojai for both baby Krishna and the Lord, followed by a community lunch where everyone sat together and ate.

Mukunda – the one who grants liberation:
Friday, 15th , with the colour of white, being Indian Independence Day, a celebration of Freedom, some students wrote a song on Krishna which was set to tune and performed, and they also wrote a verse based on the main lessons of – the Trees, the River Cauvery, Uprightness of man and Mira Bhai for which the students performed a movement apart from the regular performance of patriotic songs and flag hoisting.

Ganesh Chathurthi
The birth of Ganesha, was celebrated on August 26th with idols of Ganesha being made from clay by the students in their classes with the help of the teachers a day earlier, which were brought down ceremoniously and placed in proper arrangements. Traditional offerings were made, stories about Ganesha were told, songs sung and a dance by one of the students was performed.

Onam
Onam is in the first week of September, but it is celebrated for10 days earlier to Thiruvonam day. In KLC the “Pookolams - Flower rangolis” were arranged in the landing by students and teachers of different grades, from 26th of August, in preparation for the celebration of Onam on 4th September.

Vocation a way of Livelihood:
For many of our trainees in school, learning, perfecting and mastering a vocation leads to a livelihood. So is the case for Salman, who started the stitching vocation and has now reached the stage of perfecting it. These table runners and table mats are products completed by him independently and when they are appreciated and bought, it is a source of self-esteem and satisfaction helping him to move towards mastery 😊.

Awareness, Acceptance and Creating a space:
Young Indians (Yi), together with CII, had organised the Walk Along, 3rd Edition, (Together for a Better Tomorrow) on Eliots beach on August 10th. Their motto was “Just like our Chennai city embraces everyone with warmth; the Walk Along is all about creating a space where every voice is heard and every ability celebrated.” Walk Along was designed to celebrate individuals with disabilities and provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. We had many of our KLC students, parents, caregivers and staff participating in this event. We joined the larger contingent from the other units of V-Excel who also participated.

A youthful Tarang:
A young trio - vocalist Nanditha Kannan, violinist Bhargava Vignesh, Mridangam player Ajeet Sridhar, performed on the theme Krishna and Freedom on 21st August, at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, for the students. It was a beautiful 1 hour of musical experience, which the students and staff enjoyed and thanked the artists for their efforts.

Rakshabandhan: Celebrating Bonds Beyond Words at V-Excel
Every festival in V-Excel is celebrated in it's quintessential form. Children in the special school KLC celebrated Raksha Bandhan as a sharing of loving energy between students with each other, teachers and students as well. Not defined by gender or relationship it just shares a brotherhood amongst everyone. Special significance lies in the fact when such celebrations and connections are made, the calm acceptance, sitting tolerance, and peaceful smiles all tell us that the soul understands what the eyes cannot see.✨
