Early Intervention and V-Excel Remedial Centre
From the staff of Early Intervention and V-Excel Remedial Centre
Greetings from Early Intervention and the Remedial Unit!
Group sessions for Olcott School Resource Room children in Sharada
We have been providing services for the last one year to 28 students of Olcott Memorial School who were identified as having learning difficulties by setting up a Resource Room in the school.
In spite of our regular therapy and remedial interventions, it was observed that some students need intensive training on basic concepts and other academic related concerns. So we selected 10 students for this program. These students were asked to come to Sharada and sessions were planned from 9.30 am - 12.30 pm on Saturdays. Here we focus on areas like attention focus, academics, motor development and regulation of behavior issues. The activities are carefully planned to motivate the students and also make learning an enjoyable one..
Some of the activities include circle time activities, understanding social behaviour, balance and co-ordination activities, individual skill developmental activities. They are also given exposure to music, dance and craft..
One of our goals is to encourage the habit of reading in the children. As we all know, there is a decline in children’s reading habit nowadays. It is often attributed to the increasing prevalence of technology, particularly social media and video games, which provides instant gratification and distract from sustained reading; other factors include a lack of engaging reading material, busy schedules, limited parental involvement in reading time, and a shift towards more visual forms of entertainment like television and online videos. We want to at least bring a change in these children that will motivate others to follow..
Having completed a few group sessions, the children have been responding well and showing interest in the activities. We are hopeful of providing services to more such needy children.

From Shashikala Subramaniam's Desk
Aaqila, one of our students (part of the group called Free Hearts) said, "February is the month for hard work!". It truly has been.

Voices Unseen - Bridging Gaps, Building Hope
The NGO conference organised by V-Excel on February 1st, brought together many representatives from NGOs across Tamil Nadu. A few of our teachers attended the conference and gave a short musical performance in between, to perk up the participants.

Competitions more a chance to participate:
This February 18 students from almost all grades participated in Javate 2025, a special cultural, inter - school competition for the special students held on 8th February, at Lady Andal School, Harrington Road, Chennai. This is an annual event and KLC has been participating in it for the last few years. The students participated in various categories like art competition, singing, dancing - both individual and group, talent show and fancy-dress competition. The students were receptive to the training and participated well in their respective competitions. Sandhya won the first prize in the art competition for seniors.

A Milestone in Tarang:
Tarang, the music / dance program for the special students and trainees, celebrated its 15th year in a grand way on February 13th Thursday between 2.00 to 4.00 pm at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. The Art beat Ensemble of Kalaimamani Dr. Ghatam Karthick with his team of percussionists and musicians entertained the captive audience of our students with rhythm and beats with their mesmerising music and songs by Sai Vignesh and Samanvitha.

Comedy through Drama brought to the fore:
This year’s annual day play is a comedy and as an exercise for the teachers to experience / feel the emotions while enacting it, a space, time and situation was given on a Friday afternoon. Groups of teachers had to choose a comedy scene which they enjoyed and perform it for the other teachers. We had 4 groups of teachers, who gave stellar performances, which brought out the hidden comic talents in them.

Preparations for the Annual day - The Golden Fruit
Practice became more serious, and more children and teachers took on more roles with special practices in the morning and post lunch when the play was rehearsed in entirety.
Through this month we worked on -
- Patience and tolerance: We have an hour-long practice and most of the students
sit quite peacefully though the practice.
- Sequencing: The play goes in a sequence, following a story line. Children are learning to listen to cues to enter, and do a series of gestures/actions that follow a particular sequence in relation to the dialogue:
- Confidence and Posture:
For many children, the fact that they are in the limelight and must "perform" is daunting. However, we are working in a way that makes the process joyful, with enough of the group, with music and rhythm, that helps them feel comfortable.
- Therapy:
Every child and teacher have a role. The roles are chosen in a way that there is a goal, that must be achieved through it.

Prop making and costume making as part of our handwork and vocational activity began and the school became very busy with the production - on stage and off stage. Many times, a costume/prop is worked on, tried and re-worked to suit the requirement of the actors.

Clove bean harvest:
Our gardening students and teachers harvested a local variety of beans from our garden. It is called clove bean or "mookuthi avarai" in Tamizh. They planted the seeds last August, and the first batch was harvested, and we will have another round or two of harvest in the coming weeks. The beans were cooked in our kitchen by Anandhi akka to Thamizh’s Karakozhambu recipe and we had them with our lunch.
This is one among the many varieties of beans that were grown in the households of Tamilnadu and Kerala until a few decades earlier. They come in two colours. Green and purple. The one that we harvested was purple clove bean. Almost all of them, we lost to reasons like the snails, overwatering, rains, curious hands of children etc. But only this plant survived. We hope to collect seeds from them in the next harvest. And hope to grow, cook and eat a lot more vegetables from our garden and wish we could share these local variety seeds during our December bazaar.

Looking forward to seeing you all for our Cultural / Annual Day Play - The Golden Fruit on April 5th, 6th 2025, at Kalakshetra’s Rukmini Arangam. A formal invitation will follow soon.

Testimonial
The image was shared by the mother of Abhay Bhopale, a 5-year-old child at V-Excel's Learning Center in Solapur, on the occasion of his birthday.
This heartfelt acknowledgement is testament to the small human touches being used in the daily work at the center. They also serve as the driving force for the team, working with the child. These simple words of acknowledgement are truly encouraging and motivating.
As Dr. Vasudha describes it, "Ultimately isn't this what we wanted to do for every person we try for every child, parent and family? The words encapsulate the essence of our work - pure intention, sincere striving, warm connection, love dignity and respect for every child and parent/caregiver, a warm, affection manner and regard, supporting their spirit emotionally and physically, giving clear guidance, filling them with hope and aspiration and being there for them – a simple set of ethos that each one of us should follow across the organization."
Thank you, Sunita Vaidya and the entire team in Solapur. Keep up the good work!

V-Excel-SAF Special School, Kolapakkam
Greetings from V-Excel-SAF Special School, Kolapakkam!
Observation and Review Meeting:
One-on-one review meetings with parents of V-Excel Special School in Kolapakkam were conducted by Mr. Anand Jagadeesan, Mrs. Lekshmi Ramesh & Mrs. Lavanya Ashok on Monday, February 10th, 2025. This meeting was mainly to discuss the progress of their children and also inform them about the next quarter goals. The parents were also requested to give a feedback regarding the sessions and the improvements they observe in their children. It was very heartening to hear from parents that they have started noticing changes in their children .These children were not going to any school and were mostly spending time indoors watching mobiles or TV. They are eager to attend our sessions now though the attendance of some children have not been very regular due to their illness or home condition.
Parent Testimonial
Before coming to V-Excel, Kolapakkam, we had been to 3 mainstream schools where my son Prathikshan had lack of listening and would keep running around, because of which he was unable to continue in school. Our concerns were to improve his sitting tolerance, listening skills, and academics. Now his waiting skills and sitting tolerance have improved; he looks at us (able to sustain eye contact) and communicates his needs and is able to convey his likes/dislikes. I can see progress in the way he is eating (with a towel, spoon) and washing his hands. I refer parents having children who are unable to accommodate in mainstream school to V-Excel. Thank you for the support given.
National Science Day:
In our Kolapakkam centre, we celebrated National Science Day on 28th Feb 2025. We briefed the children about the discovery of the "Raman Effect" by Indian physicist Sir. C.V. Raman on 28th Feb 1928. As a part of the activities, we made our children draw and color the concept of National Science Day. We are planning to have theme based activities in the coming months.

Vocational Training Unit
From Charumathi Sriram's Desk
Highlight of this month was our annual field trip to Ooty horticulture resort.
Trip to Ooty horticulture (resort by KSTDC):
Perfect arrangements were made by our planning team, in terms of transport, stay and itinerary for each day.
Starting from the train journey to visiting various exciting places, our trainees got the most enjoyable and educational experience.
Some of the places we visited were the Chocolate and Tea factory, Doddabetta (the view point), Ooty train ride and the boating experience.
Visit to the Madras Regiment Centre of the Indian Army made us feel proud of our soldiers!
Thread flower Park and the hanging bridge were other attractions.
The open landscaped acreage of garden cum lawns were an attraction to take long leisurely walks, indulge in photography and play games.
The visit to Isha centre and Adiyogi gave them a glimpse of devotion and sitting in silence. This was a very profound experience for them. The fact that many of them could close their eyes for a few minutes was a huge milestone to be noted.
This trip gave them the opportunity to travel independently and learn to care for their belongings. This trip also taught them to learn to patiently wait for their turn. A lot of social inclusion happens very naturally on such ventures which helps in their growth and awareness amongst the public.
Trainees learnt to be friendly, willing to share, respectful and adaptive.
Overall, an excellent outstation trip.

All trainees, teachers and staff sang bhajan and prayers on Margaret Madam's Remembrance Day.

Tailoring workshop for students from American International School
Twelve 8th grade students from American International School visited YES as part of their community work. They took a tour around the centre and got an idea about the vocational training program. One of YES trainees, Dhennussa, under the guidance of Ms. Girija and Ms. Vijisha, taught them to make stitched paper bags and vegetable bags. Those students also attended a presentation done by our trainee Akshara on her recent US trip.

Annual outstation trip to Vizagapatnam
The YES team flew to Vizagapatnam (Vizag) for their annual outstation trip for 2025. Thirty-four individuals from YES, including 21 trainees and 13 staff members travelled on IndiGo flight to Vizag on 17 February 2025. We stayed at the Landmark Hotel. During the 3-day stay there, we visited several attractions such as Kailasagiri, Simhachalam temple, Rushikonda Beach, RK Beach, VMRDA Park, Sea Harrier Museum, Tupolev Aircraft Museum and the INS Kursura Submarine Museum. We also went on a long drive to the closest hill station, Lambasinghi, where we enjoyed a leisurely stay and visited a strawberry farm, flower garden and lovely viewpoints.
The outstation trip is always a much awaited one, and this Vizag trip will rank as one of the more memorable trips we have done thus far. The travel, stay, local sightseeing and food were organized well in advance and things went seamlessly.
Our sincere gratitude to IndiGo Airlines for being supportive and helpful, Landmark Hotel for their hospitality, officials in all the local museums for being empathetic, Simhachalam temple authorities for their unconditional support and all the transport people for their patience and understanding.
