The week of reopening school is always a time for the teachers, to organise the classrooms, to catch up with each other, to plan for the coming term with the curriculum coordinator and program coordinator, designate and take responsibility for the activities / functions of the year, to be educated and to learn from the experts with in-house training. Success Story
Rekha's journey was shared with all of you in May. A 22-year young woman, who joined KLC when she was 10-year-old, who worked hard with her teachers in improving her skills, working on her emotional difficulties, showing interest in all activities of the class, becoming confident, taking care of her peers, leading, and helping them and the teachers. As she grew up, she excelled in all the vocational skills, be it cooking, stitching, candle making, carpentry, and worked responsibly and with precision in everything that she did.
She got an opportunity to be part of a training program at Writer's Cafe for 6 months. Her teachers and counselor supported her in overcoming the challenges she faced there. Looking at her work and assessing her skills, Writer's Cafe offered her a permanent job with them from June10th.Wishing Rekha and her family the best for the coming years.

School reopened on 10th June for the students. As is the practice in KLC, children were allowed time for transition, time to settle down in their classes after the holidays, and enough time and space and care was given to the new children who joined us this year.
The first Tarang of the academic year was on June 13th by Santhosh Subramanian, Bharath Damodharan and Sarvajit. It was a wonderful program, and the students enjoyed the songs.

Whole School Artwork
After a break of few years, we had our annual Whole School Artwork for the Founder's Day. The stage was set for every student and staff of the school to paint on a big chart, with a multitude of colours to choose from, already mixed and kept by Mahalakshmi, one of our teachers. Every student came up to the easel and chose a colour, the method (sponge or brush) to paint on the chart. It was a therapeutic experience with the teachers singing along with Neha in the background. Given below the stages of the painting...

Presentations and Learnings
A teacher in KLC is always learning, from the children, from their peers, about the needs of the children, about the curriculum and how to present it to the children. Friday afternoons are times when these learnings happen. Every teacher presented their lesson / vocational plans to the other teachers, taking the help of a few to enact as children. The experience was moving, enriching and solemn.

Curriculum Related Activities
Senior School had Shirdi Sai Baba as their main lesson and related to it, they wanted to cook and serve "Sambar Rice" to everyone in the school in keeping with the teachings of Sai Baba regarding service. So, every student and teacher brought in ingredients and vegetables that were made ready and cooked in the school kitchen and served to the whole school. They visited the Sai baba Temple at Pattipulam, which provided them with a calm space to meditate and be in for a few hours.

Grade 5 students are learning about the plant world in their main lesson. Related to the lesson the students cooked different varieties of spinach, with the teacher's help every Tuesday and Thursday. They also went to Nageshwara Rao Park and Ramakrishna Mutt to observe the different varieties of plants. The students observed and listened keenly to the teachers when the lesson was explained.

Grade 3 in relation to their main lesson of Prophets took up cooking ragi pancakes / adai with enthusiasm. The students enjoyed learning the process of making the pancakes along with their teachers in the kitchen every Monday and Wednesday.

We have a few new admissions into KLC and a few old students who were away came back to be with us. A few of the students also moved away from KLC for various personal reasons – transfer to another city, to Government schools.

Flight of the Phoenix
Gokulakrishna Subramani, joined V-Excel's vocational training program in Mylapore, Chennai, when he was 18. Gokul is a slow learner with mild intellectual disability. He was shy, timid and calm. With training, patience and perseverance, he steadily progressed in learning new skills. His training program covered soft skills, personality development, personal grooming and vocational skill development. Over time, his confidence improved and his gait and posture were more composed and confident.
After a few months of intense counselling and priming, Gokula was placed in a reputed hotel chain. However, the pandemic struck and he lost his job within days of joining. V-Excel continued to be in touch with him and continued to provide the services for him to remain on-track and focused.
Post-COVID, V-Excel found Gokula another opportunity with a different hotel chain. He joined there as a trainee and climbed up to become a part of their payroll. He was progressing well and was part of the Front Office team there. However, the hotel was acquired and shut down, and Gokula lost his job again. His parents grew anxious and worried.
But with dedication and devotion from V-Excel's staff and after a wait of 5 months, Gokula was placed at the Rane Group of Companies at their corporate office in Guindy. Gokula is involved in back-office work and has one of his colleagues mentoring him. He is enjoying his work and his workplace. With the Rane team's support, he has settled well. We are very grateful to the management, not just for affording this opportunity to Gokula, but also for allowing us to conduct an awareness session at their workplace.

Yoga Day
Every year the International Yoga Day is held on 21st June to celebrate the physical and spiritual prowess that yoga has brought to the world. This 10th year yoga day's theme was "yoga for self and society". The word Yoga derives from Sanskrit, which means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. Yoga integrates the body, mind, spirit, and soul offering holistic approach to health and wealth. Its power to transform is what we celebrate in this special day.
In our school we celebrated yoga day on 21st June. Our student's performed different kinds of asanas and demonstrated that each and every one could participate and do asanas according to their ability.

Colour’s Day:
From this year we plan to introduce colour day. Every month we select a colour and all the activities are planned to reflect the colour to make the concept of colours clear in our students. We started this from June, selecting green color.
- Colours are all around us and they play a crucial role in our life from a very young age. From influencing emotions and creativity to aiding in cognitive development, colours are a powerful tool in shaping a child's world.
- Green is the result of mixing blue and yellow. The many variations of green depend on the proportion of the primary colours. Green has two paradoxical meanings - one being nature and the environment and the other being money. When it comes to nature green represents renewal and growth. It is also associated with wealth, prestige and greed.
- We selected green for this month. On 28th June our school student and staff wore clothes in green colour. We decorated the hall with green leaves and clothes. Children brought green toys, green vegetables, green colour food from their home and displayed a student corner using all these things. Activities like colouring and drawing was done by primary students using green colour. Pre-vocational children gave a small speech on the colour green. Pre-vocational student, Soundararajan did an experiment deriving green colour.

Staff training program
We conducted a staff training program on 29th June. Ms. Janani, our physiotherapist, gave a training session on sensory integration. It was a very informative session.

Sustaining eye contact- A small attempt
Neurologists across the world are trying to solve the three biggest challenges of Autism – the inability of autistic children to make eye contact, their short attention span, and their lack of empathy.
These seemingly insurmountable challenges have been surpassed not by any medical miracle but a simple tool used in traditional Indian theatre – the face mask. This is helpful for the child.
These children avoid eye contact to feel safe and the mask gives them that feeling. The magic of the mask is such that children start to look at others faces better. The normal attention span of an autistic child is just about 15-30 seconds. With the use of the face mask the attention span is increased to 300 seconds or so!
In Nellai center, we wanted to try making our children wear mask and do the activities. We started the activity of sorting the grains. This helped the child to focus, use their fine motor skills and sorting. The child was enjoying, and we are planning to try this on others slowly.
ADL training skills- Toilet training
Toilet training for people who are neurodiverse is a crucial developmental milestone that requires a tailored and patient approach. Establishing a routine and using visual aids, such as schedules or picture charts, can be immensely helpful. The importance of successful toilet training for people who are neurodiverse cannot be overstated. It enhances their independence, boosts their self-esteem, and contributes to their social inclusion and participation in various activities.
Physiotherapy helps the children in becoming independent in their toilet skills. We are engaging our children in activities like squatting, arm reaching, shoulder rotational movements, sitting on balance beam and transferring ball as a part of ADL toilet training activities. We are hopeful that the children will be able to transfer these into their daily living skill.
