International Women's Day is celebrated all over the world on March 8 th to recognize the progress made towards achieving gender equality and women's empowerment. International Women's Day 2022 theme is ‘Gender Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow'.
The role of a mother carries an important part in the celebration of womanhood. A mother is a protector, disciplinarian and friend. A mother is a selfless, loving human who makes a lot of sacrifices for the wants and needs of their children. A mother works hard to make sure their child is equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities to make it as a competent human being. Being a mother is perhaps the hardest, most rewarding job a woman will ever experience. Being the mother of a special needs child is more tough and demanding too.
As a part of acknowledging the role of the mother, we planned activities in our Early Intervention and Remedial Center.
Cards were made involving children. The thumb prints of the children were made into beautiful shapes and small messages thanking the mothers were added. Every child had a card along with a rose and a sweet and they handed it to their mother with a kiss. It was an emotional moment for us as well as the mothers. The mothers expressed this to be the happiest moment for them where they felt confident and energized to lead their life forward. This proved that a small act of kindness can bring in a lot of joy to others.
We are gearing up for group sessions for our children on Saturday. This would be for around two hours. The skills we will be working on are
• Peer Interaction /Coordination
• Taking turns
• Following instructions
• Activities of Daily Life training
• Sharing and caring
• Waiting for turns etc. Shall share more about it in the coming issue.
Warm wishes for the Tamil New Year from all of us at EI /VRC/BLA.

Summer came in without knocking at the door in Chennai this March. Suddenly it was right there upon us and the heat and humidity which is the hallmark of Chennai summers was a force to reckon with! But like life brings its own solutions, in KLC the advent of summer is usually accompanied by the festival of colours, Holi, and the children and teachers have this 'organic water day with natural colours' which becomes an excuse to play and cool down with water and wetness! This year it was a double whammy. The festival of Holi was celebrated with colours but in a different way. Each class made colourful salads. The cool watermelon, lime, grated carrots and cucumber made for another kind of cooling down experience. This was on 18 March, the day of Holi.
On 25th March, the whole school went for a water experience in the "Hydrotherapy Pool" at the Jawaharlal Nehru indoor stadium complex. Happy, refreshed, fun, joy, calm, cool, delighted were some of the adjectives to describe the wonderful day spent together.
The Tuck Shop as an extension of the vocational group's cooking experience restarted after a period of two years. So, every Friday the Sharada building has something to look forward to and the students get a practical life experience in buying and selling besides the children who are actually cooking. These organic, in house, inbuilt experiences are what sets the curative education program at KLC apart and it also helps the whole school to come together for a social experience of eating together.
Parent meetings are being held for every parent with the coordinators and goals are being drawn up and reviews being done very systematically. Parents are having one on one sessions and are able to share their innermost concerns and teachers are guiding, listening and helping a team to be formed.
The Kotturpuram Urban Forest has been re-introduced as the gardening and prevocational experiential learning for all the students of junior school. This is under the expertise of "Nizhal" an environmentally friendly educational organisation who tie up with various groups of people, schools, and organisations to increase awareness on "greening" the environment in and around Chennai.
In another experiential exercise undertaken, students of the senior school who were studying history and the Moghul block, cooked up Biryani - the most well-known Mughal dish, complete with buying vegetables, making masala paste and then cooking it on slow fire! Please click here to view the video.
KLC is also undergoing some restructuring as the composition of children is changing. We have also welcomed two new teachers in our midst. Avila and Sindhuja. Our erstwhile teachers, Latha Kannan, Kavita and Nitya have taken on additional duties of supervising curriculum, researching the blocks, designing new vocations and many other day-to-day responsibilities are being now shared with Neha and Shashi, and thus the formation of a college of teachers is beginning to take shape. Meetings with me have been arranged as part of the weekly schedule and three times a week I meet different teachers and mentors and discuss and plan their work. The whole aim of the restructuring is to build resources, share expertise and make the children programs more meaningful and more process oriented. In KLC the process is the real learning and maturing experience.

It is a much-awaited festival of colour and is celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm, especially by the young. It also marks the commencement of the Spring season in India. Erode
Greetings from all of us at the Erode Center!
Our Erode center has around 16 children in the age range of 16-23 who attend our school program. This was mainly started keeping in mind the needs of our group which consists mainly of children and young adults with cognitive impairment, ASD and CP.
Life for mentally challenged adults can often be difficult, which is why it is important to incorporate engaging activities into their schedule. You will find that such activities are likely to provide benefits beyond entertainment.
Musical Activities
Musical therapy has been proven to have a positive effect on the mentally challenged, but you do not need to be trained in musical therapy to incorporate it into a mentally challenged adult's life. Depending on the level of ability, there are a variety of activities fit for mentally challenged adults ranging from taking lessons to learn their favorite instrument - to attending a concert or a musical. Even home-bound adults can benefit from music by taking the time to listen to music during the day or watching a musical movie. Benefits include improved behavior and lower stress levels, to name a few.
• Musical therapy has been proven to have a positive effect on the mentally challenged, but you do not need to be trained in musical therapy to incorporate it into a mentally challenged adult's life. • Even home-bound adults can benefit from music by taking the time to listen to music during the day or watching a musical movie.
Art Activities
Art has also been found to have therapeutic benefits much in the same way music has. Set aside time and find a work area where you can set up paints, clay and other art supplies for a mentally challenged adult to use. Being given the ability to use art supplies to create in a freeing atmosphere can not only help with self esteem and mood, but it can also allow mentally challenged adults to express themselves in ways they might not otherwise be able.
Exercise and Sports Activities
Exercise and sports activities are also dependent upon the individual's ability level. Whether you are tossing around a beach ball, shooting hoops or swimming, you will find there are physical activities that are adaptable for a variety of capabilities. Engaging in physical activities can boost self esteem and can improve coordination in other aspects of life.
Functional Academic Skills
Living independently requires some skills which are considered academic, even if they do not lead to higher education or the completion of a diploma. Even though the word "functional" brings to mind a curriculum that focuses on day-to-day tasks or practical aspects, these lessons also need to include academic content such as math and language arts. The functional curriculum, in contrast to a traditional one, teaches academics with a life skill or practical focus. For example, it may include mathematics activities on adding money, understanding concepts such as more and less or calculating a grocery bill, along with literacy lessons on reading basics. These academic skills will help the disabled student to function in society and contribute to independent living.
Psychological Benefits of Reading Biographies
Reading biographies is beneficial. Biographies help us learn about different cultures, see life through someone else's eyes, and learn from their successes and failures. Carefully reading about ordinary people doing extraordinary things is an incredible source of inspiration. This is the main difference between reading fiction and reading about real people. From a psychological point of view, reading biographies can be a very effective tool for the development of abilities and capacities.
Keeping all this in mind, we have formulated the time table. A typical day starts with a prayer and some warm up activities. Then the students are engaged in activities for the above mentioned skill development. The day is made interesting through play and also art and craft activities. Since these children's attention span is limited, we have tried to fit in our activities and teaching sessions accordingly. We keep modifying it and are happy that we are able to engage them in the best possible manner taking into consideration the difficulty levels.
Wishing you all a very happy and prosperous Tamil New Year!
Here is the sample of our time table shown in the picture.
