Birthday Wishes
Birthdays are always special and celebrating it with friends and family makes it full. We, at EI use to celebrate the birthdays of our children and staff in our own little ways. But, Covid and lockdown had dampened all this. In spite of the difficulties, we decided to revive it when students and staff started coming to center.
We made greeting cards designed by Mr. Vasanth (our therapist and Art director!) executed by the other team members and the children. Sharing some of the cards here. We also share our wishes through messenger, WhatsApp, email.
We celebrate the staff birthdays on 4th Saturday of every month and it handover the cards and gifts.
On every child's birthday, we celebrate with the birthday song and gifts so that our children feel very special and important.
Learning from experience - Stella (Special Educator) and Arunkumar (Therapist)
Manish, our cute little member aged 3½ joined us for therapy and remedial interventions. He use to cry a lot during the first few sessions. I gave the Lock chair and slowly he started sitting on it and did the activities. For the first two to three months, he interacted with only known persons like therapist and special educator.
I was to work on his eye contact, so started showing pictures and objects keeping them on my eye level so that he started giving eye contact to the facilitators. I sang action rhymes and he started enjoying them. I initiated action by pointing the environmental object and picture the he made sound of animals and birds while singing rhymes. Slowly he started recognizing the alphabets and numbers from 1 to 10 and said common picture names. Then he started telling days of the week and then months. He was also encouraged to imitate simple sentences.
Now a days I am telling him the story - "The Blue Jackal" using story cards. He is trying to say the story with prompts and he is also able to answer simple comprehension questions. He can identify numbers upto 50, and is able to interact with all the therapists, special educators, Akkas and peers.
Now he started writing alphabets in order and reading pictures.
He also had some behaviour issues like throwing objects, adamancy, touching his and others ears etc. After giving therapy activities like interactive play, focus and attention building activities there is a considerable reduction in his behavioral concerns.
EI – Academic year program
Every month of June, when our academic year starts we follow the following plan:
• At first we write the level of every child as per the previous assessments and IPP.
• After that we asses and observe the child for 3 days
• Then we start making goals to take them forward depending on their needs.
• We write goal sheets and work towards these goals for next three months.
• We check and change the achieved goals
• We write Home programs and give parents training and explanation as this helps parents to follow them effectively.
The Warriors
The last two academic years (2020 and 2021) have given us a different experience due to the pandemic(Corona). We have new protocols to follow. Safety measures like checking temperature, wearing mask, facial shield, gloves, sanitizing hands and materials after every session so on. This is not an easy process. The children resist, the special educators and therapists have to do the activities with the shields on braving the heat and other discomfort. But, we sincerely follow them to make our services a safe and productive one. We are becoming busier day by day with more children joining in and hoping to share more interesting stories with you all.

Kaleidoscope Learning Centre
From Gita Bhalla's Desk
Students begin to trickle in to Sharda after the second wave of the Pandemic :
A gradual beginning to invite the children to school was made. Senior school saw a few students trickling in on Saturdays for two hours in the morning. It began like that. Teachers continued to plan and encourage parents to send their children to school but most parents are still not willing to take chances. So in batches, for a few hours each day from 11am to 4 pm children and teachers come to the building and physical classes are held in the premises. This is in addition to the online classes which remain undisturbed as most students attend those classes.
Celebrations
Eid was celebrated with all children and parents joining in for an online meeting. Vafir contributed a beautiful poem to capture the essence of Eid and Zainabu, the mother of Zubair and Farhan children in V Excel, recited the prayers on the occasion. Neha and Puja invited the participation of all families in the music session and sang devotional songs and told the children the story of Eid.
Vafirs message :
Independent life skills
It's with great pride that we share the achievement of Sai Hariharan whose parents Venkat and Ponrajam allowed and facilitated his participation in a outdoor camp to Yercaud for 4 days. Sai fended for himself, was part of a group and managed the trip with success. We are indeed very proud of him.
Therapies started
External therapy and music therapy along with OT begun in KLC and children have been getting this therapy regularly in the month of July. We are hoping that more children begin to avail of this opportunity soon. Every week , the whole school comes to get her for its music session which is well attended.
Visit from old faculty
Janaki our beloved and popular teacher and head from KLC who had moved to the US a few years ago is on a visit to Chennai and surprised the students and teachers by joining us for the weekly afternoon music session. There was much joy in the hearts of the children under her care. Through the screen, they wanted to touch, hold, talk and celebrate Janaki which of course brought tears of joy to her eyes. The constant pure affection and relationships not marred by time is one of the biggest reasons to celebrate the simplicity of our students.
Teacher presentations
The last two weeks of July saw each teacher presenting her online session to Gita. Feedback was given, lessons were explored for other complimentary goals, some literacy aspects added to the presentations. Also an attempt to reach each student with individual goals depending on their individual challenges. It was a very useful five hours spent on this endeavour.
Vocational training
In this month, we began with paper bag making. An elementary or prevocational attempt at all children making small simple paper pouches for pharmacy needs. Bigger bags for vegetable sellers. But as a new addition, we have also procured some more material which is stronger and thicker and those paper bags are now under production . Students are also exploring quilting stitch and running stitch on small fabric pieces. These will then be the feeders for the quilts, dohars, other articles in home decor to be made for the coming bazaar in December. Candle making and making wax diyas for diwali has also begun. Cooking classes are happening for a few students online.

Speaking about a child named Jay Verma, aged 6yrs, and having ADHD and mild autism. Jay joined the school in October 2019, had difficulty in speech, poor sitting tolerance, and a weak pincer grip. Over the past year and a half, we are noticing a lot of positive changes in him. His memory and learning skills have sharpened and are doing fairly well academically. His level of understanding and following instructions has improved.
He participated in a fancy dress competition on Independence Day last year (Organized by school online) he played the role of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and confidently narrated a few lines.
Bridges Learning Academy
Classes for BLA students began this Academic year, once again with both online and offline modes of learning. In June the results of the OBE-Level A and Level B were declared and we are happy to share the good news that all the students of BLA had passed the OBE exams with good grades in all the Subjects. Students were awarded the certificates issued from the NIOS – Pratham Study center in Mumbai. Few new students took admissions from the new Academic year. Registration has been done for new students for NIOS for both English and Marathi medium for all the three levels - A, B, and C.
Our student Vajra made a pineapple cake for her father on the occasion of Father's Day, on June 21. She made this day special by baking the cake all by herself and adding a spark, "SMILE BRIGHT" as she usually does.
Some of our students participated in an online contest with the theme 'Desh Rangila'. Astha Chauhan took part in story-telling and Dhruvi delivered a speech on Jhansi ki Rani Lakshmi Bai.
Ashadi Ekadashi is one of the most important religious festivals that is celebrated in Maharashtra in July. The Lord of the Universe Sri Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped by offering prayers in the form of songs called "Abhang". At our Centre, children planted the Tulsi plant and took part in some games and activities.
V-Excel Learning Centre
This school reopened for students on 14th June, after 7 weeks of summer break. Once again, we are following the hybrid model with 50% of students attending school on alternate days. We are very glad to share the development seen in our student Master Piyush. Being a slow learner, he was admitted in Jan 2018 to VLC. Initially, he was very slow in academics & all other areas. We noticed that he was fond of drumming and interested in playing the Musical percussion instruments- tabla & dholki. Two years back, we motivated him to take special classes to learn to play these instruments. Now he can play these instruments well. Simultaneously we are finding good progress in Academics too. Every year we celebrate Aashadhi Ekadashi. This year also we celebrate it virtually. Piyush came in the traditional costume of a Vaarkari (Pilgrim)& played the Dholki as an accompaniment to Devotional Marathi Music (Abhang)
Counseling
Parent counseling and behavior modification therapy of students is happening in full swing. Our counselor Mrs. Pradnya Apte has begun undertaking Grief-counseling sessions from this Academic Year. In May 2021, our Parent Sunita Kale lost her husband to COVID. As expected, her mental health was very disturbed and she was experiencing severe depression and insomnia with accompanied anxiety. Pradnya Apte started counseling sessions along with relaxation techniques. Every day just before bedtime, Mrs. Kale was given relaxation along with meditation. She took these sessions for approximately 6 weeks. Now Mrs. Kale feels better and has resumed her job at the bank and can sleep better. To help her maintain her mental health, Mrs. Apte sends her audio clips which impart meditation techniques, periodically.
Erode

Greetings from all of us at Erode center!
The center has started functioning full day. Most of the teachers have resumed duty. The students and all others follow strict safety measures. We make kaba sura kudineer and chukka kappi and distribute it to the staff. We have staff meeting every week for an hour and discuss about the children, share concerns and also have reading sessions.
We are having training sessions on Spoken English. This is done by Ms. Lekshmi Ramesh. One session is over and we have started to incorporate her suggestions in our own little ways. We have allotted an hour every week as the "English Hour" where we all try to converse in English as much as possible. The children are also getting motivated by this.
Sharing some happy moments:
Abhishek, aged 16 has been coming to us for the last one year. He is a slow learner and has stammering issues. He is an enthusiastic boy who tries new things .Every day we give some tongue twisters and this has helped in controlling his stammering. He is attending online sessions now.
As an activity we asked him to sow some seeds in two containers. One container was kept inside the house and the other one outside. He was asked to observe them and report how it grows. He was able to understand the idea behind this experiment. The need for sunlight water was taught. He is happy presenting it also.
The Rhytm and Diet chart
During the consultation and even for our existing students, we try to understand their Rhytm and diet-how their day is spent from the time they get up till they go to sleep. Ms. Lakshmi Sudhakaran has been guiding us with tips that would make the process easy. We compiled all the information and added on our ideas and have come out with a form. These helps us in understanding our child and plan our Program.
Solapur

From 1st July we started therapy and remedial classes at our center. 6 children for remedial and therapy, 2 for therapy and 4 children for school are now attending in person. We are continuing online sessions for remaining students. From July we have started implementing IEP.
We are maintaining COVID-19 precautions like using mask, sanitization. Also, we regularly check body temperature through non-contact thermometer.
All of our staff and almost all parents had both COVID-19 vaccination.
We celebrated Aashadhi Ekadashi virtually. Our staff and students participated in singing Vitthal bhajans. Some children were draped in traditional Warkari costumes and enjoyed the music. Ashadhi Ekadashi is a prominent festival of the Warkari community, predominantly found in Maharashtra. The day marks the culmination of a pilgrimage called called 'wari' that devotees undertake from across Maharashtra on foot to reach Pandharpur in Solapur district, which houses a famous temple dedicated to Lord Vitthal and Goddess Rukmini.

Sharing happy moments of our special educator Vidya.
Rupa Sri is a 15 year old girl with ASD. She had become very adamant and non-cooperative at home to the extent that she refused to even go to the toilet for her needs. When the online classes started, she resisted initially but got interested when I started conversing with her regulary. Slowly I made her realise the need to be responsible and also love her sister. She started helping the mother in the kitchen along with her sister. Now she helps in making dosa, cleaning the house and even folding the clothes. The positive strokes given have really given a boost.
We cannot still be happy that the center has started functioning in full swing. Challenges come in the way of the teachers and trainees falling sick and the trainees being managed by the available staff. But physical sessions are definitely helping our trainees and hopefully we will be able to serve more in the coming months.

As more trainees started coming to the centre, we resumed our regular activities in each of our vocations. Scheduled training sessions resumed and this schedule incorporated warm up, prayer, functional academics, social skills, vocational skills and independent living skills. This also had involving trainees in production work.
Online activities
Independent living
This month's online sessions were completely focused on independent living. This includes traffic rules and safety, covid safety, money concept, shopping, cooking and housekeeping. These sessions also included activities on cause, effect and consequence and art therapy. Around 14 trainees were part of these online sessions on an average. These sessions has powerpoint presentations, images, activities and discussion.
OT sessions
August month even OT sessions happened both online and at the centre. Since there were a few trainees at the centre, our therapist resumed coming to the centre and started therapy sessions at the centre.
Resumption of Counseling services and OT services at the centre
During July 2021, we also resumed our counseling services at the centre. Our counselor started visiting YES once a week. All the individual and group sessions are happening as per schedule. Counseling sessions for the staff has also resumed. For trainees not attending the centre, online counseling sessions are happening.
Similarly, in person OT sessions have also started in the month of July 2021. Our therapist visits YES twice a week and has group or individual OT sessions for the trainees who are attending the centre. Online OT sessions are going on as usual.
Annual planning meet with parents
During the month of July 2021 all the YES parents were met one on one either in person or on zoom. A Vision statement for each trainee was shared with the parents and their inputs were also taken to make sure of a comprehensive program is made for all. Necessary suggestions and recommendations were also shared with them that are to be followed at home.
Placement initiatives
With the recent Covid pandemic situation placements for our trainees, both current and alumni, has been a great challenge. Since there were a few relaxations in the lockdown during July 2021, we could get in touch with a couple of probable employers and we had face to face interviews at the centre. Interviews with the trainees along with their parents went very well and we are waiting for the results of the same.
Yoga session for the staff
To beat the stress and frustration caused by the pandemic on both personal and professional front, YES has taken the initiative to have yoga sessions for YES staff. Sessions are conducted by Ms. Aruna of Yogadarshini at a very subsidized cost. About 5 staff who are interested are part of this yoga which happens twice a week.
Staff meetings
Working Saturdays are dedicated for staff meetings. These meetings go on for 2 hours. First one hour is completely allotted for team building activities. July month, we had ‘Know your strengths’ as theme. During this interaction, each staff spoke about the strengths of all the other staff members from their own point of view. This interaction was motivating and inspiring apart from being a learning process for all. Next one hour, we discussed about admin related issues, regulating attendance, challenges with trainees and other general issues.
New admissions
We had 2 new admissions to YES in the month of July. Arpith, who was part of our online sessions in the month of June relocated to Chennai from Mumbai and joined YES.
Vidya Meenakshi got transferred from KLC last month. She is currently coming as a part time trainee to YES.
Production
Laundry services have resumed and going on as usual. Screenprinting – We completed 2 designs for Kocoatrait chocolate wrappers and 1 card insert for the same client. Kitchen – We executed an order for aloo bondas and cupcakes for our admin meeting. Digitisation – We completed scanning 1095 pictures from different albums. We also completed a few orders on mug printing, scanning, photocopying and samples for notebooks and paperbags for SNEH.
Gardening
Our small patch of land behind the main building is now being productively used to grow vegetables and herbs. We have had a decent harvest of aubergines, tomatoes, turkey berries (sundakkai) and guavas. Our trainees are actively involved in maintaining the garden under the supervision of Guru and Lakshmi.
Reusing discarded mugs
We are exploring creative ways to put to use mugs that have been discarded from our printing processes. Many of our trainees are growing herbs in these mugs. We start by drilling a small hole at the base, filling the mugs with soil and sowing seeds. The output has been wonderful. The trainees take great care of their saplings.
Pooja
On 30 July 2021, we had a small puja for our Vinayagar. All the trainees and the staff members were part of this pooja.
Thus, we ended the month of July 2021 with prayers and hope to have better and more normal days in all the coming months.
