Counseling & Assessment |

In today’s fast-changing world, stress has become inevitable. Work loads, increased tension and time urgencies have contributed a lot to psychological problems
including anxiety, adjustment problems, depression and other psychosomatic illnesses. The imbalance in life rhythms and style are causing imbalances in our physical
and emotional health. Research has repeatedly shown how fast lifestyles, working under psychological and time pressure, and dealing with emotional discords leads to
hypertension, heart attacks and even cancer! Counseling is a service that aims to overcome this by generating health, both physical and emotional.
Similarly, parents of children with special needs, go through immense grief when they learn about the child’s diagnosis. They need support to come to terms with their grief in order to help their child. Healing of the child and parents is very essential for the growth of the child. Our experience of working with children led us to start counseling services for parents.
As listening in counseling helps heal great pain and suffering in adults, so too does play heal the pain for children. Play therapy helps children with emotional problems, special needs, and learning difficulties overcome their issues a in non-threatening environment. Today children bear great pressures of academics, parental and societal expectations, peer pressures and materialistic achievements. This leads to emotional and physical ill-health. Play Therapy gives children opportunities to explore and overcome their fears and anxieties in natural settings. Play is the language of the child.
Counseling is a process in which individuals have the opportunity to improve upon their understanding of themselves, including their patterns of thoughts, behaviors, feelings, and the ways in which these may have been problematic in their lives.
Psychotherapy, on the other hand, is a set of techniques intended to cure or improve psychological and behavioral problems in individuals having clinically recognizable psychological problems like anxiety, stress, etc. Psychotherapy works at a deeper level, where a person’s personality may change and put him on different life course.
Some of the problems that we deal with include:
- Anxiety or Depression
- Adjustment problems (home, work)
- Adolescent and teenage issues
- Career and educational concerns
- Counseling for special needs/disabilities (children and adolescents)
- Marital problems, Parenting
- Psychosomatic problems
- Stress (home, school, work)

Psychological Assessments
|
|
 |
|
This is the process of using standardized tests and other objective measures to gather necessary information regarding an
individual in order to identify their current symptoms, level of functioning, strengths, difficulties and lags.
The V-Excel Assessment and Counseling Clinic has one of the richest collections of standardized psychological and psycho-
educational assessments; we have 100 test kits suitable to children, adolescents and a few apt for adults. We also have expert
professionals, all trained psychologists, to administer and interpret the tests and provide detailed reports to the clients.
Psychological Assessments include various tests listed below as well as clinical and projective tests:
- Measures on intelligence and learning difficulties
- Aptitude
- Adaptive behaviour
- Career interests
- Memory
- Creativity
- Perception
- Clinical and Personality
Some of the tests include Wechsler’s Intelligence Scale for Children – R, Developmental Test of Visual Perception, Children’s
Apperception Test, Silver Drawing Test of Cognition and Emotion, Jnana Prabhodhini Psycho Profile, High School Personality
Questionnaire, to name a few. The V-Excel Assessment Clinic is also equipped with a fully computerized intelligence, aptitude
and career interest measure known as Intelligence and Aptitude Measure (IAM).
Psycho-educational Assessments specifically developed to assess difficulties with academics and the learning and educational
process, include tests on reading, spelling, language development, mathematics, specific cognitive abilities and achievement.
The Woodcock Johnson Psycho Educational Battery, Diagnostic Test for Learning Disabilities, Wide Range Achievement Test and
Durrell Analysis of Reading Difficulty are some of the psycho-educational assessments available at the Clinic. Perception and
Drawing Assessments like The Developmental Test of Visual Perception and Draw a House-Tree-Person Test are also used in
conjunction with cognitive and achievement tests.
When used for assessing children with disabilities, these tests provide extremely valuable insights into specific areas that
require focus of work for overall development of the child. The assessments are undertaken after a thorough clinical history
taking and consultation. So the ultimate decision is based on what the child needs in terms of remedials.
Assessments provide a frame of reference to assess an individual’s strengths and weakness and provide a direction and framework
for further planning and intervention.
