From Meera Suresh's Desk
- A few ATE candidates have been volunteering for Tiffin Times and have shared their happiness.
- "Kishore : When I volunteered I did not think that it would be so challenging. It was really pleasant working with the children, training them, supporting them and also interacting with the general public. I really enjoyed telling them what all our children can do if trained properly and guided. I am really enjoying the work, both as a volunteer at the sports day event for VTU, volunteering as well as doing my OJT at Sreyas and now with Tiffin Times. Varied and vast experience I am gaining from this."
- "Lavanya : The work was great and interesting with a view to motivating the children to work smoothly and as a team. I realised what sincere training could do to special children."
- "Anwar Basha: Good experience watching the trainers interacting with the children. Since I also have a special child it was very helpful for me to observe and learn how the trainers are coping with the children patiently. A good innovation. Would love to contribute more time but I am taking care of the child now, since my wife is working."
- "Mahalakshmi : It was indeed a pleasant surprise to see the children doing so well with the public. The way they were informing the menu, handing over the packets and helping them in paying the cash was very exciting. I learnt how to be patient and motivate the children in doing the job. Nothing is impossible with the right training was a lesson I learnt from my experience."
Batch-4 of ATE classes for P.G Diploma in Multiple Disabilities, Inclusive Education and Soft Skill classes are going on. First internal tests were conducted. Guidelines for on-job training have been shared with students. Topics like IEP, Attitude and Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences were addressed. Plans to start Sign Language classes are on the cards.
Anand and Meera visited ASR Caterers to personally thank them for providing lunch for the V-Excel family's year-end meeting.
Counseling & Assessments
April month was full of year end administrative meetings and planning. Our work with corporates and various departments continued.
We had many consultations for admission or guidance. There were a few new cases for counselling. Our counselling desks at our corporate locations were full.
In V-Excel, we conducted an in-service with our VTU trainers in communication and team work. It was well-received. The in-service was full of activities. Apart from that, we had our regular individual and group sessions with trainees and teachers.
At YES, our regular sessions with trainees in group and individually continued. Our counselling support for our trainees who have been placed also continues helping them to cope and deal with issues arising at the work place.

Auditory Processing in young children
Auditory processing is the ability to discriminate, recognise and comprehend auditory information. Listening is an important skill that helps in communication, social skills and in understanding of concepts academics in young children.
Activities that helps in auditory processing skills:
- Practise listening to environmental sounds and guessing where the sounds are coming from and what is making them.
- With eyes closed, ask child identify different noises (e.g.) clock ticking, squeaky toys, paper rustling, coins rattling etc.
- Have the child close his/her eyes. Call the child from different positions in the room. See if the child can guess from which direction the voice is coming from.
- Play listening games like 'Simon Says'.
- Imitation of speech sounds.
- Hide & seek - Hide a ticking clock and have the child to locate it by listening to the sound.
- Sing songs together that involve repeating previous verses (e.g.) Old McDonald...
- Play 'I Spy' game - Identify things in the room that begins with a certain letter, say 't'.
- Play games that encourage listening for differences between words (e.g.) Ask the child to tell if two words are the same or different. Use pairs such as mat/pat, wish/fish.
- Clap a simple rhythmic sequence and ask the child to imitate sequence.
- Give the child a series of directions and ask him/her to follow the directions (e.g.) two steps and one jump. Gradually increase the length of the sequence as the child masters each stage.
- Read an unfamiliar story to the child. Ask questions about sequence of events (e.g.) first, next, last. Ask questions until the events in the story have been reviewed. You may also ask the child to predict likely events in the story.
- Present known stories, rhymes or songs with one or more parts omitted and the child must supply the missing information.
Point to remember:
- Ensure that the child is attending before giving oral directions.
- Speak slowly, clearly and in short simple sentences.
- Limit the amount of verbal information given at one time.
- Stress the relevant part of instruction by altering your pitch or giving a pause.
- Repeat instructions if needed. Ask the child to repeat what has been said.

Hastkala Samaroh 2019, Summer camp, held at V-Excel Educational Trust on 22nd April.
The centre of the room had a candle with flowers around. All the children sat in a circle, sang few songs, and prayers. 15 children were divided in two groups. Where one group went for cooking to prepare snack and juice for all children, the other group stayed in the room, continued with circle time and did their main lesson on pottery, and other topics related to handicrafts. They also listened to a story and selected their own roles to enact.
This changed after few days, thus all children got a chance to cook and to listen to main lesson during the 9 days. By 10.30 they all would eat their snack together. Post snack, all the children with their respective group would do an activity. Pottery, tie and dye, coconut shell polishing and jewelry making. By 12 noon to 12.20 pm they all would participate in games. Games like musical chair, isket and basket, ball games were much enjoyed by all.
Music, songs, poems were part of circle time and also during the activity class. !2.20 to 12.30 p.m we would close the circle by a song and a verse. On Sunday, we all went to Dakshinchitra, where we saw different handicrafts, a folk dance and also different style of houses. All the children enjoyed the picnic.
On the last day they had to exchange their hearts that they had woven on Day 1 to the friend they made in summer camp. Every child exchanged the heart with their friend. Children who were non-verbal, who did not participate much in activities also expressed their friendship in their own ways. There were two children who did not speak to each other throughout the summer camp, nor sit next to each other, but on the last day, one was very sure of his friend and went straight to him to give his heart and to sing the song, Save a space for me in your heart... It was really wonderful to see how these children communicate and make friends in their own ways.
On the last day, we had story presentation for the parents, where we enacted two stories. The parents had to pose with the tie and dye shawls and jewelry made by their child for a photo. Parents were very thrilled and we got a positive feedback from each and every parent.
