Counseling & Assessments
Greetings from Counselling Department! A month filled with festivities and sports day practice.
This month we had five new counselling clients for parenting and self development issues. We also had a few follow ups with the existing cases. There were 4 counselling desks at our Corporate counselling initiatives and we met 13 associates. The issues presented mainly revolved around relationship management and emotional regulations. Many youngsters seemed to be struggling to keep up the motivation and any kind of routine or ones own sake. The work from home solution though a boon for married employees can work against the youngsters fire to work. Its interesting to note how this option is also making people more social skills deficit.
There were 5 consultations amongst all the departments, mainly seeking admition to our vocational trianing program or school. As a team some of us continued our plant observation exercise .
YES: - At YES our counselor met 20 trainees for various issues and one parent. The interns from BALM academi continued their internship and work with individual and group. The group work involves art based and activities for self expression. They had finger painting sessions as one of the activities. Some of the trainees enjoyed it and came up with ideas as to what do they want to paint. These kinds of 'I' experiences where a young adult choses are very important milestones. The trainees have been also trained in social and other job skills. Our counsellor also met a few trainers to discuss trainees and addressing the communication with the trainees. She was also part of the Pongal festival celebration.
VTU: - There were 8 trainees met for individual work and one for communication. Four sesisons of group work conducted by our counselors and the BALM trainees. Many activities related to emotional expression, gender role understanding and safety. Two teachers were met for individual sessions. Puja along with Neha have been working with the whole group for the sports day preparation.
VRC - Two children were met for play therapy and two group sessions were conducted. One of the children was assessed earlier whose report was given and one assessment was conducted.
KLC: - four children were met for individual play, music and art therapy. Three teachers were met for individual sessions. A very beautiful task was given to our healing therapist Puja by her children. It was called Operation Love! She and the children engaged the admin department for painting, massage and talk. It was very beautiful to watch how they reach with so much love to people around unconditional something that all of us can learn from them. The admin who are our will forces always ready to stand, run, organise and magically get things going needed to be looked after too. Thanks to the children we were able to thank the admin for all the support they always extend to us.

Eye Contact and Eye Tracking in Young Children
Eye Contact is a form of non verbal communication and has a large influence on social behaviour of a person.
Strategies to encourage eye contact:
- Model appropriate eye contact with your child. Look at your child when you talk to him / her.
- Bring object / toy up to your eye level to encourage your child to look. Initially, he/she may only look at the toy, but gradually some eye contact will emerge.
- If your child is cooperative and understands what you mean, you could say "look at me"
- Sometimes gently touching your child's chin can be a reminder to look. But do not drag your child’s face round to make them look.
- Stand in front of your child when he/she is on the swing /rocking horse etc. Occasionally stop the swing and say "Ready get set" wait a few moment, in the hope that they may look at you and then immediately say "Go". As they turn to look at you more readily, you can encourage a vocalisation for "Go".
- Blowing bubbles, and then waiting, is often a successful way of eliciting eye contact.
- Use a variety of ways to gain your child's eye contact. Do not constantly nag him/her with "Look at me, look at me".
- Some children feel more comfortable when engaged in a gross motor activity. E.g. On the swing, having a tickle. The child may give spontaneous eye contact during these activities.
- Praise all spontaneous eye contact, (i.e.., say "Good Looking".)
Eye – Tracking skills and why it is essential:
- Eye tracking is the ability to visually follow a moving target or switch attention from one object to another.
- Some children need to be taught to 'track' or follow, an object with their eyes. This skill is important for all daily activities including reading, writing, drawing & playing.
- Strategies for teaching eye tracking:
- Blow bubbles, feathers in the air, or balloons.
- Sparklers: move around and get a child to follow.
- Torch activities: Follow the light along the wall cover torch with different colour paper to make it interesting.
- Toys that move on their own (Using remote/ Pull back and let go) Eyes follow the objects.
- Roll a ball, extend range and length of rolling
- 'Throw at target' activities
- Books: If the child likes books, looking at the pictures can be great. Pop-up books can be used if the child is not as interested in books as these are often more interesting.
- Puzzles: Start with their special interest. Quick puzzles where they just need to look quickly to complete the puzzle. Then build up

They got some brief information about the running of the school, went around the school, asked relevant questions, watched the students and teachers sing together and also watched the practice of the drills of the junior group. Their visit was a short one and they appreciated the work done by V-Excel.
Pongal celebrations were completed with the customary boiling the Pongal over in the pot, sharing sweets, gathering the community in a dance on 17 of January.
We were extremely fortunate to have our mentor for Curative Education , Dr. Lakshmi Prasanna for an afternoon in service with the teachers of KLC. She spent time in the classes interacting with children and later addressed the teachers concerns. It was an extremely helpful, and motivating experience.
In a rare take off from the special education in senior school who were exploring the theme of revolution and revolts in history and studying the various shapes taken by the revolts , including the non cooperation movement of Gandhiji and his unusual non violent Kranti. Inspired by these the students decided to unify the entire Sharda building into a beautiful cooperative , sharing community. Towards this end they invited the admin department to interact with students during their circle time and later some students and teachers gave their signature foot massage to the hardworking , helpful admin department who keep the running of the school in order. The spreading of joy in this unusual manner made the Love Kranti a unique experience for all at school.
Under the guidance of Lakshmi Sudhakaran a group of three girls are being prepared for a dance performance for the annual Javate, Aditi teacher of Grade 1 trains Yadavi in recitation, Vatsala took charge of the children taking up art and Ponrajam helped Abhishek to tell a story in his own words. Prajwal a kindergarten student is going to play the keyboard. All these practices are happening along side for the Javate event organised by Lady Andal School annually . Another first for the family of KLC was the announcement of the Presidents Award given to a parent of one of our students Balaji from Grade 6. He is also the husband of Muthulakshmi one of our well loved teachers of grade 4. Mr I Srinivasan, was given this award for his honest service in the Police Vigilance Department, for his services.
The child study this month has been successfully conducted on Srilatha from Grade 4. It is almost a magical slow transformation that is seen in children who are taken up for study. The loving interest shown by the teachers , holding them as questions and taking them into their night life, seeking help from the spiritual guides has a great therapeutic effect on the children and we do see a change in the targeted behaviour once the three to four weeks of study are concluded.
Shashi, Vasanthi and Latha were the teachers who being trained from Savera as part of the Tiffin times project. They attended the training programs this month and will soon be training the students.

VRC Group
We started the group by December and is going great with kids getting settled. They’re now included for sports day event of KLC too, which is a great thing to share with. Ever since we’ve started, we do come across some "Aha" moments with our kids as they’re getting variety of exposures to show their individual reflections. Shyam, the youngest of all is having a great time and is very regular to the class. He now calls his classmates "Anna" (brother) and is happy to say "Good Morning" to them. He repeats many words attends by teachers at the right context. For example, once things are self or group lunch he would say take towels and would set the dining mats too. He will be the first to say hand on chest and to be ready for prayer. He's able to wait and do participate in sports drill though we support a lot keeping him happy and composed.
Yogesh is showing up his beautiful dimension. As we started to draw our lesson in the main book, we were amazed to see his drawing skills. He draws Animals & birds with details and appropriate proportion. He enjoyed drawing on the SMART BOARD and looking towards to nourish him this special talent.
Sivasaran is a boy who needs friendship and wants to be a leader. He is able to manage with his mood swings with varied exposures. He's enjoying sports drill downstairs and is volunteering to keep the classroom clean. He helps Yogesh to understand classroom activities like story telling in English, as Siva looks like a great English to Tamil translator!
They all enjoyed a surprise visit-(as part of Nature walk) to the street bound (roadside) farm near the school. Came back with great stories of the visit and had a gala time for su

D.Abhishek - 3rd C
Abhishek joined Cathedral School in the academic year 2018. He had studied 1st.and 2nd standard in an English medium school. Now he is studying in Tamil medium. Abhishek was referred by his class teacher because he was not able to cope up with the syllabus.the remedial teacher found that his attention, memory, reading and writing skills were age appropriate.his problem was he had difficulty in learning all subjects in Tamil.
He needed individual attention training in Tamil language. Every day he was trained to learn Tamil alphabets. Once this was learnt two and three letter words were introduced. In the last six months with rigorous training and practice.he is able to read from his text books at school. He now makes an earnest efforts to read on his own. Though he has spelling difficulties while writing,he tries to practice it. So individualised training has helped him to become confident and academics has improved.
Nalandaway:
We started on 2nd January after the Christmas break holidays. We spoke with the children about they spent their vacation and what a new year means. Along with our regular activities we did some craft work for Pongal. We spoke about it and its importance. Kids were very happy and showed lot of interest.
The attendance after the Pongal holidays was very less mainly due to the teachers strike. We just had only one or 2 students for about 7-8 days. The picture shows children practicing their Occupational Therapy activities. The activity performed below is very helpful in maintaining balance of the body. The kids performing are Saiprasad and Afzal of grade 2. Saiprasad is a child with Down Syndrome who is also non-verbal. Afzal is a borderline intellectually-challenged child with attention and motor skills issues.
We plan to continue with our regular activities and sessions along with introducing new ones in the month of February. We hope students' attendance will get back to normalcy soon.
